Just picked up a Splawn Modded Marshall 1987X MK II. ;D I had a Quickrod about a year ago and sold it off pretty fast but this modded Marshall is singing to me right now. It's the honeymoon phase but damm I think it's a keeper. Sounds better than my go to Budda SD18 even at the lowest volumes.

Cool ;D
I have a Splawn modded 1959SLPx that sounds great. Scott did some great mods on these Marshalls. I know he's too busy to do mods now but I have a few stock Marshalls that could use some Splawn love.
Rock on

Rock on With Scott not doing them now, check out the David Bray mods or contact John Suhr at Suhr guitars; he does great mods (I have had many that he has done; they all sounded amazing). I had one of Scott modded Marshalls (late 70's JMP head) and it was flat out awesome. In a moment of stupidity, brought on my financial instability, I sold it. Too bad as it would be a great backup for my Quickrod when I get it.

My modded Plexi has the KT 88's and Mercury Magnetics transformers. It is a beast. Bray mods sound great for that one thing.....I thought about him but that is alot o coin for that. Suhr mods I have heard only good things about, but I don't know what he has to offer, etc. I was really interested in the Cameron modded stuff but he seems to be rather elusive and not very timely or professional in how he conducts business. His mods/amps get rave reviews though And I use vintage 30's . ;D

Suhr mods I have heard only good things about, but I don't know what he has to offer, etc. A good example of his lead mod is Tesla's cover of "The Ocean"; listen to the sloppier of the two players (that is Tommy); the tone he is using is a Marshall modded by John Suhr (I used to have that amp; sold it in one of my many moments of weakness/stupidity). Also, Reb Beach with his Whitesnake and Dokken stuff; that is all the lead mod by John. Some of Eddie's crunchy stuff on his live work is a modded plexi with John's crunch mod. He does one called a copter mod that Tommy really likes, but that is not his design and was a Bradshaw thing (it sounds more modern and less tone-y, if that makes any sense to you). I may have some old demos I did with my Suhr Marshalls somewhere; if I find them I will see about posting them somewhere.

I am just anyone, so yes. John is not as inclined to do them anymore, but still will. If you get past his flunkies that try to filter the phone calls, and you actually talk to John, he will usually hook you up. If he can't, I am pretty sure Martin at Bradshaw/CAE still does the exact same mods as well. John used to charge $400, but I think Bradshaw charges $500. If I find those demos I will post some of the soundbites so people can get an idea of how these things sound; they are great mods. I was actually looking at getting the CAE OD100 amp, but it is a bit pricey (over $3200 for the OD100 SE), and I am not sure if it is any better than the Quickrod that I ended up going with.

I played an OD100 a few days ago and it wasn't that great, especially for how much they cost, stick with the Splawn.

rockerjt,
I have been told that Chris Impelliteri used Marshalls with the Bradshaw "crunch mod". Is this the same thing? I really dig his tone on System X and Pedal to the Metal. If those are any indication then they sound killer.
Do you have any experience with the Cameron mods? If so, how do they compare to the Suhr/Bradshaw mods?

If so, how do they compare to the Suhr/Bradshaw mods? The Bradshaw Crunch mod is one of the mods that John developed and still uses. It is a great rhythm tone (Eddie uses/used one of these live for years), and you can do leads with it, but I have punched it up with a fulldrive 2 (or whatever overdrive you have), and it gives it that extra edge. The crunch mod cleans up nicely with a volume roll off on the guitar too. I prefer Johns "Lead Mod" though; definitely no overdrive pedal needed with that one. The crunch mod is cheaper to have done, as I don't think he adds an extra tube like he does with the lead mod. Cameron mods? Not a lot of experience with those. I hear they are great, but I also hear that the guy is hard to get in touch with, and I am a freak about someone taking my money and my amp and then just getting it back to me whenever; for that reason alone I wouldn't use him. If you ever see any Tim Caswell modded heads out there on EBay or whatever, snag one. I rented one from this amp place down in LA a long time ago, and it was smokin'!!! I never was able to get in touch with Tim to mod one for me, as he was involved with Soldano at that point. Rumour has it that Slash actually used a Caswell modded Marshall JCM800 to record Appetite, not a Jubilee as is widely reported these days. Come to think of it, that amp was rented too. Hmm.......... Stay away from Torres modded amps; expensive, noisy crap. Paid him $500 for the priviledge of ruining one of my Marshalls; what a joke.

Speaking of Caswell...I've heard some of his amps have a good pedigree... www.guitardigest.com/slash.pdfIn fact, I think he's got a web page out there somewhere and is still doing the slash/lynch mod....whatever! ;D
