This is NOT directed at drjenkins, but it seems alot of the guys on HC complaining about amps not being "heavy" enough are playing little girly Ibanez guitars or ESP LTD's, crappy pointy rock sticks.. LOL. You need a PHAT piece of wood and good pups to sound heavy IMO. I think getting more gain to copmpensate for a crappy guitar is a bad idea. I think most people miss this,, maybe its something you learn with age,, LOL... Very well said Craig! Finally, someone who has the same opinion on the subject that I do. Been say that for a long time. I swear, I will never buy another Ibanez, Jackson, or ESP ever again. Anything made of Basswood is terrible. I am so freakin excited about this Mansel Guitar I can't even contain myself! ;D Dude, my Wolfgang was Basswood and I had to sell it after getting the Mansel. It sounded like a piece of cardboard in comparison. I'm convinced that the only reason Eddie used basswood was the light weight and hes a real small guy. I'm 6'1, 220 so I don't have that problem I guess. Its worth the sore shoulders to have a solid mahagony slab.

Thats right. I am 6'3, 160, and I have not problem with a beefy guitar. Might build up my shoulder muscles!

I look at it this way..I think it's better to have a great amp and a solid, well built guitar with a really good pickup in it than a fantastic guitar and a run of the mill amp...
you guys plug an ESP or an EBMM with a good Seymour Duncan pickup into a splawn (both of which I have..lol) and I'm sure it'll sound killer..and I'll know soon enough =)
ya plug one of your mansels or a PRS or an Anderson or a Suhr into a cruddy randall combo SS amp, or a crate tube amp or something and it's gonna sound like bawls =0)
anywho, as much as you guys dispell sound or build qualities of ESP (understandably the ltd's, which I fully agree with...I had one, and my lynch is of much higher quality than that, that's for sure) or basswood (that of which my EBMM Axis is made of and it sounds big and full), I love both of them..they both play and sound great...
so that's my story and I'm sticking to it =) lol
anywho, it boils down to preference...that's why there's different tone woods, etc, etc...

I know I will get slamed here but I don't think guitar wood plays much of a role in the sound of electric guitar. Obviously your pickup will make a difference but your amp and speakers IMO is by far your main source of tone. You could throw a Dimarzio, Duncan or what not in a cheap guitar including (basswood) and still get a great tone if your amp sounds good. In fact I believe your hands will have more of an impact on your sound then the type of wood your guitar is made of. I would never by into mahoghany sounds way better then basswood or alder has no sustain or all the crazy S---t people say and believe.

Of course, I am sure Craig and attest to the Mansels being really awesome! I would mind getting a Suhr someday. They have some really cool looking ones out there!

I have played Andersons,Suhr's,McNaught's,PRS's(I own one) etc and many other top o' the line axes. Those axes are damn fine instruments! They are exceptional in every way.
I'm gonna get flamed for saying this but oh well....
I like my bolt on Kramers,Charvels,Jacksons,Strats,Ibanez's etc way more for a couple of reasons.Namely the frickin' cost. And when I crank up it doesn't make a whole lotta difference to me what I'm playing.
And I don't worry as much about scratches etc...And I can change necks/parts out really easy and they are not hard to find.
I will admit I am gassing pretty hard for a Mansel Mahogany bodied Bengal Tiger as of late. But I'll probably buy a Warmoth neck and put it on another Kramer or Charvel and be just as happy, less the killer paint job of course!
;D
