I bought and installed a couple of WGS speakers into my Port City OS 2x12. I got an ET-65 and a Vet 30. Once I got them installed and I fired up the QR, I wasn’t sure how I felt about them. Obviously they are a different speaker from the Small Blocks and Celestion G12t-75 that I’m used to. The ET is smooth and creamy with a subdued high end while the Vet has a pronounced midrange and a bit of high end sparkle. I didn’t have much time to play at that time as I had an appointment to get to. Now, when I got back home I went back downstairs and had a chance to A/B them with my other speaker cabs. I’m glad I did this...:they actually sound quite good. I used my Port City, a Marshall 1936 and a Bugera 2x12 with their Vintage speakers. All 3 cabs sounded pretty good but the Port City is clearly the superior cab and therefore sounded best. But the Bugera was the surprise here...it sounded DAMN good. Tight lows and nice present mids. Of course the Marshall fared well too...it is the workhorse of the industry after all. It was more scooped in the mids than the the others, as to be expected. I forgot to mention, Last week I swapped one of the small blocks for a 12t-75 in both the Marshall and the Port City. It’s actually a really nice combo. There was a video on YouTube of a guy demoing his Quickrod through a Marshall cab with the 12t’s and it sounded really good so I thought “I wonder what that would sound like paired up with a small block?”...the answer is good, damn good. So, as it stands I need to let the WGS break in before I make any decisions about them....they are good but I’m used to hearing the small block/12t’s so I’m still on the fence.

I went and played for a while this morning with the new speakers....I think I’m going to go ahead and put back the Small Block/G12t-75 combo. I have another currently empty speaker cab I can put the WGS into. I think they will work better for my Blackstar which is a much darker amp than the Splawn.

I admire you for being able to make these kinds of tonal determinations so quickly.
That is probably because you have more experience and because you gig.
I'd think that the speakers are not broken in yet?
Congrats on your purchase.

They probably sound a little stiff and brittle as they aren't broken in? I had a veteran 30 and another WGS speaker in a Siemens 2 x 12 and they were broken in and sounded brittle with my QR. I sold that cab within 2 weeks. I don't remember what the other speaker was. I will check my old pics and see if i took a pic of them.
I honestly think creambacks are the ultimate speaker for Splawns. I like greenbacks also but some players will find they break up quick which i like for VH tone.

Sorry lol it was a Seismic cab and the speakers were a retro 30 not veteran. I am getting Alzheimers lol. The second was a governor. I didn't like the sound of that cab at all. Very thin and bright. Weird because the governor is supposed to be like a small block. But not in that cab lol....

They definitely aren’t broken in yet, however I hear something in them that I feel just don’t jive with the Quickrod. Specifically the Vet 30. It’s that midrange these speakers accentuate. The reason I already know that they aren’t right for this amp is that even when they become broken in, the basic tone of the speaker isn’t suddenly going to just change and become something that it currently isn’t. Sure it might take some high end harshness, but it’s just not a warm enough speaker with the Splawn, plain and simple. I just came home from rehearsal and I took my Marshall 1936 cab. It’s got a small block and a 12t-75...same as the Port city(before I swapped in the WGS). Let me tell you, it sounded HUUUUUGE!! Lol I think that for me the small block/12t-75 is my combination for this amp.

Put two creambacks in there and your face will melt!! Ask Scott! Too bad greenbacks are only 20 or 25 watts. You could use them in a 2 x 12 but would have to use 50 watt.

Before my Splawn 212 I had an Avatar 212 with a H30 and a Classic Lead 80. Pretty nice combo I'd say. 60w total. Warm'ish.

Thanks for the WGS report gtrjunior... bummer it wasn't your cup of tea but now you know. Yeah speakers will warm up and loosen up a bit when broken in but the basic character isn't going to change.
I have a Creamback with a rip in the cone that I could sell you if you want it. It's just collecting dust in my office right now. If you're interested I'll send you some pics... felt like such an idiot, it was in the back of my car and I stopped short and it fell on the floor and has about a 1" rip in the cone. If you could get it repaired it might be good for you. Let me know if you're interested.

I actually bought an empty Marshall cab from a guy on CL for $50 a few weeks ago. I installed the WGS in there but haven’t wired it up yet. I think those speakers will probably be fantastic with my Blackstar as its a bit darker of an amp. I reinstalled the Celestion/ small block combo in the Port City and it sounds good. Thanks for the offer on the creamback but I think I’m good with speakers at the moment.
