Yeah, for years I couldn't get along with lower gain pedals/settings. I just found myself playing "too hard". Then I discovered compression....

A compressor is definitely one of those "secret weapon" pedals that everyone should have hidden in the rig somewhere. Along with an EQ in the loop! Hmm... I might have to try a compressor out with my rig. They usually go early in the chain in front of the amp true?

I used to have an MXR eq in the loop. I feel like it's not necessary. I'm getting spectacular tone without it. Yes, compressor goes early in the chain. I like them before dirt but after the wah.

I used to use a eq in the loop of my DSL to give it a bit more beef. I don't think an eq is needed with Splawn.

The EQ isn't really necessary but I like having it in there, bit of tweaking helps.
My Street Rod sounded great today, a tiny bit more MXR EQ tweaking, bumped the gain a bit, the true bypass Crybaby Classic is in there instead of the 95Q (barf!) I was most pleased. Again gear 2 was used quite a bit, it's bassy but fills things in nicely when needed. There are sublties to this Splawn that I'm constantly discovering.
Even the other guitarist who has a Two Rock said "Wow yours sounds like mine now" Heh-heh! Hey they're both great amps

A while back I knew a guy that has a JCM800 combo. It had some issues getting a good bass response. So he used an MXR 10 band and it sounded awesome. That's the reason I got one initially. But I found myself constantly tweaking....it was never "just right". Then the day I plugged straight into the QR I was blown away...I never put the eq back in the chain.

Yeah man, the extra compression makes it "feel" so smooth and effortless. Especially using the BB Preamp. I'm sure your Bad Monkey does the same.

Cool man...looking forward to the results I played everything in Gear 3 yesterday. I've found new happiness there Ya know I'm finding new happiness in all three gears at different times. I was a gear 3 fan, tried gear 2 for some stuff, sounded great, went back to gear one for some slightly cleaner stuff, awesome. Back to gear 3 for higher gain stuff, equally awesome! LIke I said in a previous post, there are *so* many subtleties, and I mean *great* sounding subtleties in these amps.

I've never noticed any tone suck from the Bad Monkey but I've also never really A/B'd that. I got it because I was new to guitar (I owned only a Valveking) and people were saying it was cleaner than a Tubescreamer (less coloring) and also had more tone control for the half the price. Have never really given it much thought. I suppose OD pedals are the next logical new frontier for me
