So I'm thinking of switching over to a greenback loaded Marshall reissue cab. I just don't dig my vintage 30 loaded cab that much. I have some experience with greenbacks, but not with the QR. Has anyone ever played a QR through greenbacks? Comments?

no experience with greenbacks, but makes sense that the V30's don't sound good with this amp..I find them to be VERY bright almost to the point of being harsh, and the QR is a mid heavy amp..put those two together and you get instant ice pick..lol

Funny you should mention that, I just bought a 1960ax cab yesterday just for the hell of it, it was cheap and local. I'm hoplessly curious that way. Anyway, I'm going to try it with my QR tomorrow, I can report back how it sounds in comparison to my other cabs, my favorite is the Splawn 4x12 with the Redcoats. I don't have any cabs with greenbacks so I'm curious to see what they sound like. I totally don't expect the ax to be a better match to the QR than the Splawn cab, but it's still worthwhile to have first hand experience to cut through all the differing opinions you come across these days on the internet. An informed opinion is an easy way to see through the bs out there. So even if I mess with the ax for a bit and sell it, it's still a worthwhile excercise and I won't lose my a** on the resale.
Was your V30 cab a top cab? I had both a 1960av and bv, they sounded totally different from each other, I sold the av, still have the bv which sounds good. The Splawn blows then both away I think.
Anyway, I'll report back about the ax. It's kind of funny, I'm really not interested in any more amp stuff, I'm so completely happy with my setup. It's a good feeling.

G12H30s sound really cool. But I keep going back to my Splawn Eminence X Pattern Cab.

Ditto on the eminence Splawn cabs.. but IMO all the Celestions are a bit brittle for me.. I don't like the breakup to come from the speaker at all.

Hi,
I highly recommend scumbag speakers... They are voiced like the best pre rola celestions made. They are bright but in a good way.. I had a v30 and it sounded muddy next to the scumbag. Of course there are the emminence speakers which are good also.

Hey, I did a quick a/b test at home with the 1960ax cab, the Splawn cab, and some others. The 1960ax sounds pretty good with the QR, I could easily gig with it. Check out my full review in the cabinets section.

I can't afford to pay $600 just to reload a 4x12. However, I'll keep my eyes out for some used ones.

I don't need stop on a dime metal, but I play hard rock and still need a fairly tight low end...no flub or fartiness.

I don't think the ax sounds flabby or anything on the low end, nothing to be afraid of there. It's just got a different character than the Splawn, a little more scooped in the mids, a little less focused low end, and little extra grit, but not fizzy or anything. I liked it. We're getting into super subjective territory here, and not sure I can describe with words what my ears are hearing, but what I can tell you I thought the ax was entirely useable with the QR. It sounded nice, definately rock n roll. I guess the bigger point is, there's no reason to avoid the ax with your QR, those greenbacks do have a unique flavor that comes through with the QR. No reason to avoid it if that's where your interest lies. Whether it's YOUR be all and end all tone, I can't say.
Like I mentioned I just bought my ax cab the other day, thinking I'd mess with it and turn it over sinced I really don't want more gear. But I kinda dug it because it's got such a unique character, it may be worth hanging onto for that reason alone. But I'm not sure I want four 4x12's around either. We'll see.

Yesterday...I did some experimentation with a G12H30, CL80 AND A PEAVEY Sheffield 1200 in my Splawn 2x12 cabinet. I settled on the G12H30 and the Sheffield 1200. The CL80 is a great speaker too but this combination seem to yield the most bass and treble. Volume-wise between high mid and low it put a smile on my face. I don't need a 4x12 long story short.
Ok...has anybody else tried and like Peavey Sheffield 1200 series speakers ? What Eminence speakers produce all around high/lows ?

I search for gear no more, I feel totally happy with my tone. I'm still a curious type, if nothing else than to have good points of reference for comparison sake, but I really have no interest in messing with my live setup. Maybe mic placement, that sort of thing, but that's it. In fact I may be selling some stuff off. Anyone have an interest in my Splawn Marshall 1987xl? I think it needs a good home, and it's tax time.
