do you find higher mids help you cut through the most? or is it a balancing act between the mids and presence?

mids in general are a good thing, especially through a PA. Its that frequency range where you not fighting with drums, or bass. I'm not a big fan of alot of presence, but I will move it past that 12 o'clock mark only if I need more stage volume or high-end for myself..

yeah, I usually keep my presence AND treble at about noon...mids and bass at around 2:30 or so...maybe a little less..
I also discovered something..at least in my bedroom...the amp sounds much tighter when I have the casters on it! go figure =D
I think this way second gear may be useable for me..with the gain up of course..heheh...I'm gonna try that during sound check at our gig on saturday..

speaking of videos, we have a pro comming out on saturday to video tape us...he's not going to do the full blown video..he usually uses about four of five cameras..but this is just going to be quick and dirrty (tee hee) and for FREE, to see if we wanna get him to do a full blown one...so if that comes out ok, it'll be comming up on our website..

it came out good, considering! the one we took three weeks ago sucked ass..cause my bro in law wasn't in front of the pa...so all you got was my buddy's guitar in the recording cause his cab was facing right at the camcorder...well, until I turned up to nuclear levels..then you can hear me a bit...heheh....but I wouldn't be caught dead puttin' THAT video on the net..for private consumption only..lol

I find the Quick Rod cuts better than most amps I've ever played. My JCM800 cuts as well, but it has a natural tendency to focus on the highs a tad more, which could come across as more "shrill" sounding.
As I've mentioned ad nauseum...my other guitarist uses a 5150...and he keeps the gain and presence fairly high. I've actually EQ'd my Quick Rod to come just below his piece of EQ real estate...
Bass 2 o'clock Mids Noon Treble 11 o'clock Presence around noon...maybe 1:00 if needed. (For the same reasons DirtyCraig mentioned.)
I used 2nd Gear with the gain around 12:30~1:00 at our gig on New Year's Eve...the sound man loved my amp...said it was a piece of cake to mix. ( I had the master at around 10:00)
There were a few other bands on the bill that night...every one of them asked about the Quick Rod!!! It was pretty sweet, every guitarist from each band just loved the tone I was getting with the amp!! The better compliment came from audience members after we finished...quite a few people mentioned how good my "guitar" sounded, they were using words like "balanced", "chunky", etc. That was pretty cool

Thanks shred...it's the first time I've heard that many compliments on my tone from someone other than the soundguy. I'm always amazed at how well the Quick Rod cuts...and it does it in a very non-offensive way. The band following us were using 2 Marshalls...very shrill sounding. (And I dig Marshalls.) The QR is just soooooooo thick sounding!!!
