Hello all, Just picked up a used Street Rod...very nice amp! Heavy though for this "older" guy. I love the amp so far, still experimenting. It had been re-tubed with all JJ. Sounds nice, but like some have said, kind of like a blanket over the amp. I really like a nice, percussive, sustaining pick attack when soloing. So, I may try a different tube or two in the pre-amp. All I have laying around right now is a Genalex Gold Lion 12ax7. I do not want to increase breakup in the clean channel though. Anyway, looking forward to playing with this amp, and spending (too much) time on this forum!

Welcome to the forum iceman! I have run JJ's, Tungsol's and Sino's(I think they are labeled Splawn pre amp tubes on the website) in the preamp, actually like the Sino's the best. QR is a great amp just make sure you adjust the EQ with your ears and not your eyes! The members on this forum are always very helpful as are Scott and the guys at the shop. Good luck!

Thanks jcortez. Is it best to run the Sino's in all pre-amp positions? Or is there one slot that is most influential on the lead/overdrive tone?

I havent tried individual tube tests with my QR. I think the V1 slot is for the clean channel. All others are the gain stages if I remember correctly. There are plenty of previous posts that go into depth about different preamp tube experimentation though.

Welcome ICEMAN! I have a Streetrod and it is my all time favorite amp! Seriously!!! I too have done some re-tubing. The clean channel was not clean enough so I have been trying some different tubes. Here are 2 clips. I can post more information about what I am currently using later today. Keep in mind that V2 yes V2 is the first stage of the preamp. Also, these clips were recorded at a little above bedroom volume. The microphone on the phone slightly distorts the clean tones. So keep that in mind. In person it was a little less distorted. www.youtube.com/watch?v=azOacBWhv6swww.youtube.com/watch?v=MrGwwzx2uxwEnjoy!

Did a little bit of tube rolling tonight. All I have around right now are a Genalex 12ax7 and a 7025. Tried the Genalex in v3 first, noticed no real difference, then in v2 and noticed no real difference. I tried the 7025 in v1, and maybe the cleans are a little cleaner...maybe. Again, the amp has all JJ's in it currently. I'm starting to regret getting rid of my Badger 30. The Street Rod is just dull. I've been researching on this forum and see favorable talk about the Sino's, Tunsols and Rubys(specificaly the 12ax7AC5 HG+ and the 12ax7AC7, however, in various orders between slots. I talked with Scott at Splawn today and he sounded busy, so I did'nt get much info out of him. He said the stock tubes are basicaly Rubys. I've also heard the Sino's are stock. Anyway, I don't have a lot of money to spend on rolling a bunch of tubes. I'll eventually buy either a couple of the stock pre-amp tubes, or maybe a Tungsol and a Ruby. Maybe I need to change out v2 and v3 to notice any real difference. Don't know if I need to change out v1 as I'm ok with the cleans as of now.
