Hi, I have a new Street Rod. I LOVE this amp! I use humbucking guitars. When I strum the strings just a bit hard, the amp starts to distort when on the clean channel.
I am thinking about trying some different preamp tubes. Do you have any recommendations?
Thanks!

I don't think you're ver going to get "Fender" cleans from a Splawn QR based amp, which is what the SR is... basically a lower wattage QR. However, you can find preamp tubes that are cleaner than others. You might try the Eurotubes website. I believe they're the biggest US dealer for JJ tubes and have quite a selection. I've seen some preamp tubes on their site that were described as cleaner than most other makes.

I don't expect Fender cleans, but at least Marshall type cleans. I have been experimenting with some 5751's and it helps a LITTLE bit. IDK if there is a circuit problem. You shouldn't have your sound breaking up or distorting on the clean channel.

Shouldn't be distorting, but the clean channel on my QR does break up a bit. In fact... in order to get a nice sound from the clean channel I have to dial up the gain a bit. Otherwise it's too thin sounding. The clean channel on my QR definitely breaks up more than the clean channels on any of my Mesa Boogie or Fender amps and seems to me to be more similar to what I've experienced with Marshall amps I've played, which is what I expected. If you're getting distortion, you may have a problem... bad tube or tube socket, loose solder joint, etc. Maybe even something as simple as a bad cord or dying battery in an F/X pedal.

I ordered some new tubes today to try. From very low gain to medium gain. 12AY7, 12AU7 & 12AT7. Scott told me to change the V1 tube. I did using some new JJ 5751's and it didn't seem to help much. Trying them 1 at a time in V1, V2, then both in V1 & V2. I will try the even lower gain tubes later this week when they arrive. I still LOVE the gain channel 100%!

So here is what I ended up using. I run at Full Power (40 watts) Gear 2, OD1, Gain from 9:00 to 1:00 depending on what I'm playing. TC Nova System in the loop. I run the Treble OFF, Mid at about 1:00, Bass about 9:00, and presence to taste.
Here is the information from the Splawn Street Rod Manual on tube positions and functions.
Tube Layout 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
1. Pre-amp tube - 12AX7 2nd gain stage of the clean channel
2. Pre-amp tube -12AX7 Side A 1st gain stage for clean & OD channels -- Side B 2nd gain stage of OD channel
3. Pre-amp tube -12AX7 Side A 3rd gain stage of OD channel -- Side B 4th gain stage of OD channel
4. Pre-amp tube -12AX7 Phase Inverter
5. Power Tube - EL34B
6. Power Tube- EL34B
I am currently using in position..
1, JAN PHILLIPS 5814A
2, JJ ECC 83 S
3, JJ ECC 83 S
4, JJ 5751
5, JJ E 34 L

I have the 100 watt version of yours (Quick Rod) and my clean channel breaks up a hair when really strumming hard even with gain at 9:00 on Ch1. What someone said about turning the gain up on Ch1 takes care of that pretty much. I'm use to the Fender and Mesa cleans, but the Splawn cleans are growing on me and sound great in band mix with effects. I run a Tung-Sol in V1 and a Chinese Ruby HG+ in V2. What tube you put in V1 will of course only affect the clean Ch and V2 tube will affect Ch1 as well as Ch2, so maybe go with a smoother lower gain tube in V2 also if you want cleans very clean.

Old thread, but I ended up with a Street Rod in a trade and have spent all weekend trying it out.
I noticed this at first too. Putting a 12AU7 in V1 solved this problem immediately.

I've had a Street Rod for a few years now... as others have said it will break up if you really hit it hard but it's a natural breakup, not distortion... To my ears/experience it has quite a bit of headroom and the clean channel can get really loud (much louder than the dirty channel on the same settings).
