Hi guys!
Anyone using the Competition for a cover band? I am in a 90s cover band that covers rock, pop, hard rock and grunge and although I have some channel switchers that I really like, I am on the lookout for a simple single channel, yet versatile head where I can use the guitar's volume knob for clean and various shades of gain, plus the Gears, OD 1/2 and Solo Boost are a nice bonus! Scott does a great job equipping his guitars for the stage.
How has the Comp been working for you all in a band setting?

I got my Competition about a month ago. I have gigged a few times with it, each time has gotten better as I have been able to dial in the tone more to my liking. Initially, I got the amp 2 days before a gig and I hated it after using it at that gig. Now, having a month to get it set up and mess around with the EQ, I am starting to really dig it. I play in a cover band as well. Last practice, I turned the gain way down, almost about 11:00. That way I could clean up well on Gear 1 with the guitar volume (for Simple Man), could still get an AC/DC ish crunch with the OD on Gear 1, and I had Gear 2 for our 80's metal anthems. Overall, not a good first impression, but I am really starting to dig it after a month!

To me, Splawns are very 1980s, unless you play the Nitro, which is more modern. I think that is what bothers me, since my band covers the 1990s. I need something that fits that period better.

I bought a Competition about three months ago and LOVE it! I play in a cover band that does 70s thru todays stuff and am over the moon happy with the tone. I roll down the guitar volume for clean tones and cannot believe how amazing the Comp sounds!! To my ears, the tone is somewhere between Van Halen II and the guitar one of Dokken's Under Lock and Key, so I can see your 80's comment. That said and to me, the tone of early Van Halen is still my favorite of all time and I could not be happier with my Competition. It absolutely roars!!

I'm have a pair of 07 Competition heads with Splawn 4x12 cabs, using sm. and big block speakers in them. I love the Competition. I find it has a useable clean with the guitar vol rolled down. I'm using a PRS with Duncan 59 in the neck and Duncan Custom Custom in the bridge. Of course It's not a shimmering glassy clean it's more of a bluesy clean with a lil dirt on it,but very usable in my opinion, and when you roll the guitar vol back up..holy crap its a beast! I'm not using any pedals in my setup, just the good ole 3 button footswitch. I like the fact that I can use the amp this way. The gain on the comp to me is awesome may not be more modern sounding to some, but I have had no complaints. It is a Quickrod without the clean channel so if you need a really clean channel,I would go that route. I am selling one of my Comp setups. I have it listed here in the classifieds if your interested.
Whatever you decide with Splawn, you can't go wrong!

I've had my Competition for about a month. If you are in gear 1 and roll down your volume you can get a good clean.
