I bought two NOS RCA blackplate 5751's off of Ebay recently and played around with them in the Nitro this weekend. After putting both in V1 and V2 and then one in each V1 and V2 I love having one in the V1. It still has the same saturation and Gain, but I have more range with my gain knob and the cleans sound better as well. So far , I think it will be staying, but we will see after my gig on saturday.

That is a nice tube BTW. It is oft. recommended for Phase inverter, give it a whirl there. If you like that, I think you will enjoy the black plate 12ax7 in your amp, I know I do!

Very cool. I'd love to get a RCA Blackplate to try out. I do use and recommend the JAN Phillips 5751 quite a bit. Like speedemon said, try it in the PI spot as well. That is where I currently have my 5751. Also, FYI, I'm not sure about the Nitro but the Quick Rod is set up like this: V1 is only the the second gain stage of the clean channel. V2 is input stage for both channels. I found that out the hard way.

I've been playing around with a bag of assorted preamp tubes for the last couple days. I did the blind taste test where I'd have my buddy swap tubes out and I'd jam a bit and take notes on what I heard and felt. I ended up with a Jan Phillips 5751 in th PI slot, a JJ 12AX7 in the 1st gain stage (position 2), and Tung Sols in the other 2 spots. I went back and swapped the 5751 out with a Mullard 12AX7 and while it made the feel slightly stiffer and a wee bit louder it killed some of the touch sensitivity that the 5751 gave it. I'll keep the 5751 in the PI position and call it my B+ Nitro. ;D
