I purchased a used SR combo yesterday. Never owned a Marshall, last amp I owned was an Blackstar HT40. I've played a number of Marshalls in my local GC including the JVM combos. I've only had a few hours in with the my SR but one thing I am finding is that it has a real fuzzy sound, like I put a fuzz face line. I have been unable to dial it out. In am wondering if perhaps what I am hearing is indeed just part of the Splawn sound and I am just not used to it. I made a recording with just a drum machine and a guitar with a bareknuckle humbucker. I am just noodling but I wanted to get something recorded for others so they can comment on whether what I am hearing is just the natural sounds of the SR or perhaps there may be something just not right. I do not have a history of the amp as far as the tubes or any other work that they may have gone into the amp. Please excuse the playing, I am a keyboard player by nature and just recorded one take but I did try to play with different picking and strumming styles so folks may be able to respond to the sound. I am using gear 1 with gain at about 1 o'clock. I have tried a whole bunch of different guitars and setting but the result is the same. Love the feel of this amp. Please let me know if this sounds right to you. soundcloud.com/rickshapiro63/sets/splawn

OK just had a listen. I personally love that sound you're getting there. Do you have anything in the loop to keep it at room volume or are you running it at gig volume? Fuzz boxes give you a rubbery/dead attack and fizz. Or is the plexi type bite a bit bright for your taste...Try other pickups/tubes/master volume levels bro and I'm sure you'll get that sound you want. The sound clip sounds to me like a really good marshall!

I was running with a tc electronics nova in the middle with everything off so I could use the loop volume. I cannot wait to try it at gig volume, next gig is in a week. I think I am not used to such a rich harmonically complex sound. I have the tone and presence way down. I have been listening to some of the Splawn clips online and it does appear my amp sound is in line with others. Thanks again for the listen. Sent from my Nexus 7 using proboards

Doesn't sound unusual to me either (and pretty damn good in places.) But I wanted to point out that 2nd Gear will be rounder, if you're looking for a bit less bite.

Still tweaking, the mid pot seems to be the big tone changer. I also need to remember I have not pushed the amp yet. The recording was done with a small condensor mic and a fairly low volume (using the fx loop volume), but the recording does sound very close to what I am hearing. The more I listen to others playing Splawns the more I am recognizing the voice and mine does seem to be about right.

Sounds like a SR to me. I use mine for gigs alot and like most tube amps, it is heavenly when you crank it!

If theres any guitarists in the audience when you gig with that, they're gonna wish they had that tone.
