I'm new to the forum and to Splawn but thought I would share this very effective trick. In the past whenever I would have an amp where I needed more clean headroom, something I would do would be to replace a 12AX7 with a 5751. The Street Rod as we all know has a LOT of available gain and maybe even more than some may need. This also makes for a clean channel that breaks up fairly quickly and makes getting a good clean sound at gig volumes a real challenge. What I did was put a 5751 in V2, which places one half of the tube in the clean channel and one half in the lead channel. This effectively gave me more clean headroom in the clean channel and reduced the gain somewhat in the lead channel, but you can still get back to high gain territory by simply changing gears or increasing the pre level.
I play a great variety of music and am currently in both an 80s metal cover band where I use a Jem and an 8 piece horn band where I use a SRV Strat and G&L Comanche. I have a large pedal board, and ONE AMP, my beloved Street Rod! Now if I cold just get my hands on a matching 1x12 which seems to be as easy to find as Sasquatch!

Thanks for the info. I've been thinking about trying a 5751 in the PI slot of my Nitro.

I have a Jan-Phillips 5751 coming from Tube Depot. I'll try it in V1, V2 and PI on my Nitro. My reason for all this brain damage is that in order to get a deep clean tone I have to raise the gain quite a bit and I'm getting a little more break up than I'd like. According to the Nitro manual V1 is the second gain stage for the clean channel, V2 is the first gain stage of the clean channel and the second of the OD channel and V4 is the PI. I'll just have to experiment to see how it affects the OD channel.

I put a 60's RCA 12ax7 in V2 to take some of the spike out of the high gain side of the amp. Worked great! Very tight still but with no ice-pick that the stock tube had. Im thinking about putting the same kind of tube in V1 which is the clean channel to increase headroom for cleans.

I got the 5751 in Fed-Ex today. After switching it around 20-30 times I think I like it best in the V2 position which is the first gain stage of the clean and the first and second gain stages of the OD channel. The clean channel has slightly less break up than before and is a little warmer but the OD channel really improved as well. It's rounder with just as much saturation as with a Tungsol 12AX7 but the highs are toned down a bit. Not so much so that the presence knob can bring them right back. Also what little preamp hiss there was at idle was cut in half. Overall it really smoothed everything out without making a drastic change to my tone.

Would you say you are gonna keep your nitro this way? Did it improve it that much?

So you liked it enough to go another step further in this direction? This is interesting, great thread.

I think Im going to get another RCA NOS for my V1. You do know that V1 is the second gain stage of the clean channel, right? I think you meant V2 which is the input for both channels.

I spoke to Scott and he said that V1 has the biggest affect on clean and V2 on overdrive. I have a NOS RCA in V2, putting one in V1 as well should clean up the clean channel even more.

Usually people put a NOS tube in the input stage so I assumed (read ASSumed) that you'd follow suite. The clean channel really likes smother, lower gain tubes where the gain channel gets slight tone variations but isn't as dependant on brand or type to sound great.
