I don't want to disrespect someone who can do something I cannot, but… well, I always think FJA mods sound worse than the original amps. And always like this clip. Sure, it's bleeding gain, which is cool, but it's a buzzy, sawtooth gain with no shape to the notes. Three chords go gizzzzzzzzzzzzz, guzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, gozzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, with none of the complex chew I'm so addicted to, none of the girth, none of the brownsound lyrical warmth.
I think that FJA tone he makes serves a purpose for brootz chuggers, but deleting the modded Marshall characteristics of a Splawn seems a perverse route to get there. They could surely have started with something colder and German if those qualities don't appeal?

yeah....I think alot of his clients must be chugga chuggers. He took all the colour out of the amp and just made it bite really hard.

The Competition doesn't need any modification, it kicks enough ass as is! After owning 2 Nitro's & a QR the Competition is my personal favorite.

I totally agree. I don't know what you would do with this tone other than shred at home. Splawns are voiced to fill the guitar sound in a band, this is just buzzsaw. Even the fja 5150 sounds worse

I knew I would have to answer for this. I'm not suggesting the Competition is better or anything like that it's just more pleasing to my ears. Of course it's not as thunderous as the Nitro or as loud as the QR but it just appeals to my liking more. Very simple, single channel amp, I set set everything at noon (except vol) and forget it and very rarely come out of 1 st gear. Gotta love the sweet chewy mids! I don't know if mine is special but every time I plug in it sounds perfect right out of the gate...

Not trying to make you answer to anything. I was just curious what you found different. I have read before that others feel the Competition and the 100watt single channel version of the QR are a little more aggressive than the QR. Not that the QR sounds tame, but it seems I am always chasing the most pissed off tone I can get!

Since you have a comp, would you say it cleans up as well as a qr? Like when you roll your volume back on your guitar. Do you run any upfront or loop pedals? I have a qr but have seen a few comps for sale and would love a second Splawn for backup and I actually run all 3 gears on my qr but could get by without a clean on my backup.

I don 't get why someone would buy a hot rodded amp then have it modded again.Didn't you buy this amp because you liked the way it was meant to sound by the OG builder? Then after you spend the money on the amp you spend more on a mod you have no idea if you will like or not in the end. But the one thing is for sure is you pissed away a lot of money.

I know. Just buy a couple distortion pedals and play then through the clean channel.

The guy that owns it loves it and that's all that matters. He doesn't feel he pissed away anything. If using a pedal into a clean channel was the answer why do you guys own Splawns? Jerry

Jerry I was suggesting a pedal through the clean channel as an alternative to modding a hand-built boutique amp. A lot of guys do that not to replace the OD channel but to add some variety. By the way, I don't think it's very cool to be so snarky on your first post. In the business you're in I wouldn't think it would behoove you to alienate so many potential customers.

HI Everyone,
I'm new to the forum and may I start with a huge SPLAWN Brown Sound of a HELLO! I agree with Lewis and Noah76, that a Splawn Competition is a powerful amp to begin with and not sure why someone would want it modded.
Could be like buying a Lamborghini and then taking it to an after market customization place only to tweak it for more performance? Doesn't really make sense to me.
I appreciate people have the right to make choices and respect that. However, if someone isn't happy with the FJA mod (no guarantee mods will pleas), can it be undone? (at additional cost of course) and will the sound be returned as it was originally?
If you must customize a Splawn, I'd recommend speaking to Scott Splawn first. They are his babies and no one knows them better and he's such a lovely person to deal with also. For new Splawns, I suspect after market mods may void the limited lifetime warranty. Hence another reason to speak to Scott first.
Thanks everyone, look forward to more discussions.
Christos

Totally agree with you rocknrolla, not convinced negative rhetoric from FJA is good marketing for potential customers. Someone like Scott Splawn has built a solid reputation on outstanding professional service and I believe others can learn plenty from Scott. People (including you) are entitled to their opinions without being shot down and I totally agree with you. If one must mod a Splawn, I'd recommend they speak to Scott first. These amps are his babies and no one knows them better and if they're brand new, I believe having Scott and his team working on them will not void the limited life time warranty. Best, Christos
