I have been rolling lots of pre tubes lately and have some observations I will share.
I've never had an an amp before that you could notice such differences during tube changes!
J.J. tubes seem to be the most compressed, a smooth full distortion lots on the lower midrange and for sure the lowest (dullest) on the high end. Plenty of gain but real smooth and not bitey. Probably best for a ratty or shrill amp. I had to really turn the presence up to get what I wanted with these and it still wasn't right.
Some say their splawns are trebly but mine is dark and rich by nature these tubes were like a blanket.I have about 20 of these new and all act the same. again best for a shrill amp IMO.
Tung sol reissue
Big and boomy bright hard and lower gain sounding. The best way I can describe it is it made my Street rod into a fender (ish). Kinda like I was using 6L6 power tubes. Most headroom of all. I'll bet these would be good in a cleaner type amp.
Sino ax7b
Very gainy and lotts of buzz and bite completely dialable in and out,but still clean up fine.
Very rippin tube for sure.
Probably the best tube for those that are used to using a pedal to get a little more drive and edgier high gain sound. It's right here.
Also the best of all new tubes i've tried on and not on this list. I see the reason Splawns are shipped with these. Seems to me they get dull faster than most perhaps.
Blackburn Mullard NOS boxplate.
Not as gainey as sino close to the JJ in gain but edgier and much better top end.
Best of all for sure, but if I didn't have them Sino would be next.
Most complex and has awesome mid gain thickness and touch dynamics
