I've been looking at the Mako Mak4 preamp pretty hard lately. It has stellar reviews and the clips sound great. Anyone have any first hand experience with these?

Sorry, I don't, I just wanted to say I've always liked the clips of Mako amps. And his internal shots are like builder pr0n. So overbuilt.

I recently had the Mako Dorado. It was a point to point version and a masterpiece as far as build quality. As far as tone goes, that is really subjective. I traded my Pro Mod for it and I regret that more than I can tell you. I want another Splawn back so bad...
In other words..I was dissapointed.

How was the tone compared to your old ProMod?

That Pro Mod was the non gear version with the MM transformers. It was super aggressive and had way more cut than the Mako did. I play in lower tunings and need that mid cit. The Dorado isn't a middy amp and sounded kinda muffled to me.
The amps were way different tone wise. I personally say the Splawn killed it. I'm sick about it every day over that trade. I guess the insane modded Marshall circuit amps are my thing. I had a VHT Deliverance and liked it better than the Dorado as well. But again tone is so subjective. VHT Deliverance with an OD out front flat out kills.
I only did the swap for the Mako because it was way more managable at lower volumes than the Splawn. Looking back, I should have thought of something different. My next amp will be a Splawn with the loop volume. Live and learn...

I was looking hard at mako's until I found Splawns. Good thing I didn't try to buy one b/c they are pricey as hell! I'm definitely glad I went with the Pro Mod instead.

I was going to get the rack preamp to run into my Nitro's fx return. I'd run it all through a GCX switcher so I'd have 6 channels of all tube goodness when it was done.

Yes..I'm buying a Splawn again as soon as I get the funds. The customer service for Mako is top notch though (just like Splawn!!)

The PM with an OD out front was one of the heaviest tones I've ever heard. Mako's are not awful..but they are not a boosted Splawn either!!

I wanted a Mako but when I went to place an order the builder was moving his shop so I was told that the wait would be substantial. This was in 2008. Luckily for me I discovered Splawn and got a Nitro instead. I like the mako clips but I have never played one.
