What's new for 2012? Transformers! A friend has told me that Heyboer is out and ClassicTone is in. This will be kind of the third era in Splawn tone and feel. The Quick Rod et al began with Mercury Magnetics, changed to Heyboer around '06 (?) and now to ClassicTone. www.classictone.net/They are made by Magnetic Components. Tighter? Looser? More aggressive? Less? Who knows?! I did some snooping. At around $55 bulk for a Marshall style 100 watt output tranny, I believe the ClassicTones are around half the price of the current Heyboers, which are about $110-120 bought in bulk. Let us hope it's not just a cost cutting decision. Other changes: philm posted here that Quick Rods will ship with the once optional 4-button footswitch by default and cost $1950. The website still has the Heyboer logo and the old price.

Not sure where this info came from some is true some is not. First the pricing for Heyboers in bulk is way off. They are no where near that expensive. We have been using both Heyboers and Classic Tones for most all of 2011 without any complaints. We just need another supplier to help us meet the demand for orders. We are going to a lay down style power transformer very soon. No different in tone just to keep them from shifting during shipping. Both transformer companies make awesome products with great reputations and are still made in the USA. The new prices and changes are up on the site so check them out. Thanks for all the support from you guys. We are working on new things for 2012 and hopefully one will have 6 strings.

Thanks, Tree! Sorry for any misinfo. If you don't make announcements, we have to infer, and that gets messy. I'd not heard anyone say they had ClassicTone trannies until now. Have now heard of two people with bent transformers after shipping as the chassis tabs are softer, so I hope the laydown style helps keep things in place! I got the bulk Heyboer pricing from Mojo. Was just a quick snoop for comparison. A little Googling of ClassicTone will however pick up a lot of builders talking about how cheap they are compared with the competition. Also, that they sound good. So it's just luck of the draw whether you get ClassicTone or Heyboer in an amp at the moment? Or certain models use each? Amp builders say they sound pretty different, with the ClassicTone being more warm and vintage sounding. Are they interchangeable later? Would be great to see Splawn guitars (again!) Share some info when you can. All the best for 2012; the word is sure spreading.

We always have had problems with the upright power transformers shifting every once in a while if the amp gets dropped on its side. It does not hurt a thing but it can freak people out. As for the price at the volume that we are buying its not a big difference at all between the two. You have to remember that Mojo is buying direct just like we are so their bulk pricing is not our price. Just because something cost more does not mean its better. The power transformers have the same specs so there is not a difference and the outputs are very very similar. Scott builds and plays every amp before it leaves the shop and we hooked up both and he could not tell us which was which. We don't make announcements on things like this because it tends to confuse people. Some things need to be left up to our judgment. This is Scott's baby so he is always trying to make them better.
