I know this is going to sound crazy , weird and totally not me...but I've been playing around with a guitar for about 5-6 years, doing things here and there to it, when time allowed/money also ;D, but here goes, don't laugh too hard.
I'm a Wolfgang, Les Paul guy and man, about 10 yrs ago, I picked up a very heavy, dark sounding Fender Squier Stagemaster..... I know...crap. Well, while in the store testing it out , the pinch harmonics were just popping out , tap harmonics, popping out...well, I said, how much is this thing? My buddy said, 150.00.... I was like with case? He said " YEY ", I said "SOLD!"
Well , I got the guitar home, I went ahead and blocked the tremolo, opened up the neck pickup and bam, a 59 seymour sitting in it. I said, well, no wonder they were popping out. So , kept it in the bridge position for awhile, left it under the bed for probably 2-3 years... then, I said, man, now , where was I?
I was in the middle of moving and was staying at my parents house, when I had the bright idea to make that guitar look stressed out...Cig burns and all.... I tried to emulate wear marks where I thought they might be with a real crappy paint job. Turned out nice, did the belt buckle marks and all, turned out looking older looking, almost too stressed. Then, I had another idea to put all new electrics in, (I did this to my Paul and wired it like a 59 Paul with Slash pickups installed with bubblebee caps an all!)(turned out nice) so I said, what the heck.
I ordered some 500k pots from the EVH line, and also ordered a bridge pickup from peavey(from the Wolfgang series)(which I'm used to)(love these pickups) Let it sit for another couple of months. Well, picked it up again, I said " I really don't like this fret job, so I had my guitar guy refret the neck , and also mount the Wolfgang pickup straight to wood, problem is, the wood was gone from the stagemaster, as in for height to be right, so he added some wood, mounted pickup, refretted the guitar, etc, etc.... basically almost a new guitar.
Well, the turn out....AWESOME!!!! to say the least. Problem though....rewind!!!! My guitar guy put a cap on the volume pot, which was terrible when turning volume down, went real trebly.... Anyway, took that off and man oh man, sounded freaking amazing. Now , I know alot of you are like, yey, right? , A Stagemaster? Well, the tone is actually very articulate compared to the wolfgangs, which are a bit more sloppy(is this the word I'm looking for?) I guess. Kind of like playing a 5150, then going Splawn.....
I just setup a Wet / Dry setup for gigs, and I couldn't stop playing this guitar lastnight. It's been awhile since I felt like a kid with some new sneakers...man, my wife was like, I haven't heard you play that long in awhile... I know, Stagemaster..... I might have a diamond in the rough, but , sh!t, I'm keeping it, does it look like sh!t....yes, but then ,so do I. Will I play this live...uh...yey, I'll put it up to the front of the list now, not sitting under the bed no more, for sure!!! Just thought I'd share, sorry soOOO long, but , I couldn't (as of now) be any happier with it. Turned out WAY better than anticipated.... Talk to you all later!!!
Marc
P.S. That pic on the couch is after stressing it, I will put a newer pic up as as I can take some this weekend... This pic was before fret job and rewiring....Also, do I like the new EVH 500k pots....they are okay, I don't like them to be that slippery, but they do at times, feel great, when pulling up for leads, or doing Cathedrel(spelling?)...It has it's moments...feels very worn in and not noisy at all. I can't believe I'm digging this thing...I'm so hardcore Paul/Wolfgang.....Stagemaster? WEIRD!!!!
