So I got my Splawn KT88 Nitro and I like the tone at stage volume where this thing is a monster. But I felt like the bottom end was way too thumpy/boomy and highs kinda brittle. I even went and tested a used one at guitar center and got similar results. So I have made the decision to go to EL34s as that is the tube most of the sound clips I listened to of the QR and Nitro had. My hope is by using the EL34s in the Nitro will mean a meaner version than what a EL34 QR would be and tamer than a KT88 Nitro. Somewhere in the middle so to speak. I play is a cover band and I think the tone of the Nitro is too heavy modern for lack of a better term. Does my thinking sound on base? I am sending it back to Scott this week to have some others issues taken care of and brought up to 2010 specs. Hoping for the best!!!

I had a similar issue with my Pro-Mod. I was after a more aggressive sound and a step away from that dark/modern sound. Switching to el34b's was Josh's suggestion and after a ton of tube comparisons, that is what he put in. Helped me a lot in my opinion. The sound wasnt bad to begin with, just a little too loud and unusable for me at times. It made me fall in love with Splawn all over again when I got it home an fired it up! Of course, I learned speakers really do make a huge difference with these amps...

Yeah so far I have found the GT75s suck with a Splawn. Can someone point out which speakers are found to be the best? There is a used Splawn 4x12 Straight cab with 2 greenbacks and 2 70th anniversary so I am guessingthose would be good. What Eminence would be good. What is the smallblocks comparable to?

I run small blocks in my 4x12 and they sound great. I've also have a 2x12 with g12k-100's and they are very smooth also. Vintage 30's are ok with the EL34's but are very ice-picky with the KT88's. I tried G12t-75 and G12t-100's and they do not match up well.

Well I think I am covered then. If the small block is a green back and a big block is a G12h 70th anniversary I am good to go. My really nice Carvin cab is loaded with The top two speakers being Eminence Wizards which USSpeaker.com says is a replacement for the G12H and my bottom 2 are the real deal G12Hs. So it appears I have a cab loaded with big block style speakers and now it is no surprise that the Carvin cab sounds tons better than the Marshall with the GT75s. Even with the KT88s. I think the EL34 setup is going to be even better now. At least I know I don't have to go cab/speaker shopping too.
