My streetrod is so dark sounding. I have to run the presence cranked to even get close to where I want it. It drives me nuts when I hear people talking about Splawns being shrill. Farthest from the truth. Currently I have new Sinos ( I just replaced them thinking they were getting dull)and that did nothing.I have tried sino & jj preamp tubes, and have some mullard (Blackburn) and tung sols original from my Quickrod.
Does anybody have experience with tubes that made their Splawn too bright? I may start there. I am trying to get top end like say, Rush farewell to kings album marshall sounds. My amp sounds great just too dark.

Look to our Chinese trade partners for top end, I have some GTs I will send you that should do the trick, no charge, just a couple bucks for postage. That is a great sound to aim for! ;- )

Remember that the more you squash volume in the loop, the darker it will get.

The TungSols that came stock in my quickrod in the preamp were too bright for me. Switched them to a mix of JJ's, TungSol and Chinese no-brands and it rocks now!!!!! Just retubed with JJ el34s as well, shes a mean one!!

If you are switching power tubes from one brand to another, do you have to re bias each time? Or can you get tubes that are "graded" the same and be ok?

I havent been able to get a really dark sound out of my Street Rod at all. Im re-tubing and re-biasing to get rid of some of the brittleness and shrillness

In my experience with my QR the brightest sounding tube set was all Tung-Sol (pre's and PT's). Generally speaking... the JJ pre's are going to have a warmer sound than either the Tung-Sol or Sino pre's.

I run Tung Sols in my Nitro. They are a bit brighter and very clear.

I use JJs in all my amps now. They have been the most consistantly good that I have found.

New here but not new to Splawn, my SR combo is my 4th splawn, 2 Qr's and 1 Pro-Mod. I also find mine to be really dark, treble at 9, mid- noon, bass -noon, presence at 7. Not sure what to think or do about it.

Chinese tubes are the Sinos, under various names, Groove Tubes, and most unbranded stuff. If they are under ~$10 ea new, 99% chance China. If you check out tube dealer sites, they will state clearly which are China and which are Soviet. If the chinese 12ax7 isn't bright enough for you (tho I can't imagine that!) the EL34s will be.
Good luck and have fun!
