Thinking about trading amps online. Just wondering if anyone could shed light on how it works. (might be a dumb question) Ive just never done a trade over the internet before, ive only bought and sold online.

I've traded amps on line. Its a leap of faith in many respects but you can lessen the chance of getting taken by doing some snooping or homework. You gotta front the shipping on your end so expect to be out a bill at least.. I'd get well acquainted with the person you are possibly trading with (talk on the phone as well as email). Check out how old they are, are they married, kids etc.. See if they have positive ebay rep or ask for references from other gear forums they might be a part of. If all checks out an you feel good about it arrange for both of you to ship the same day and mandate immediate tracking info. I never trade online with pawn shops, music stores, or anybody that is not intimately familiar with the gear they are trying to trade you. It might sound a little excessive but it's better that getting screwed and being out an expensive piece of gear.

I am friends with a guy at my local mom and pop music store. I asked him if he would mind "mediating" deals like this. All he would be responsible for is that the gear is shipped correctly and is as advertised. For example, I would have someone ship their amp to him. He would have been in contact with both parties so he would be familiar with the agreement. When the amp showed up at his store he could make sure it is what it's supposed to be and would not release it to me until I gave him my amp for shipping. Stores could even charge a small fee for this service. It's always nice when someone has been on a forum for a while too. At least then you know they are a fellow gear nut and will most likely be as excited about the trade as you are.
