I've played some Squiers that sounded great.. I think its just all about the hardware. Like after a few gigs you really start seeing where the cuts were made.. when your salty man-sweat starts to disintegrate the bridge and cheap pots etc.. Other than that theres no reason not to grab one of these for a steal maybe replace the neck and pup's! yep..pots are usually the most downgraded part..I expect that going in... for instance..the pup selector switch on my epilady is starting to go...I don't know if it needs contact cleaner or just a new switch..but it's a simple fix.. then again i've had to replace the pot on my lynch several times..that's a push pull though so that takes an extra beating...

I had a Squier Jazzmaster that felt and sounded great, played a few basses that were quality too. I think Squier has stepped it up a bit in the past few years. My Tele Deluxe '72 RI is a MIM and is an awesome guitar. My Edwards LP is every bit as good as my Gibson LP. I still refuse to pay more than $1k for a guitar. I also do not feel comfortable gigging with a guitar that costs as much as a used car.

Edwards is also a great alternative to spending thousands on a real Gibson. Even Epiphone makes great quality guitars for the price. Sure, the pickups may or may not be decent but they're heavy and if you get one with a good nut and good fit and finish, who gives a sh!t?

Every now and then you can find a gem among the lower end guitars. I once owned a Epiphone Les Paul cherryburst that was made in Korea. It was a 1996 so was 14 years old and played and sounded like butter! (good thing ;D). It had Seymour Duncans that I installed. My buddy had a 1992 Les Paul Standard and he kept freaking saying that he like my Epi better! For some damn reason..... I ended up trading it to him. I have regretted it ever since. I only paid 350 bucks for that thing. I also had a friend that had an older Mexican strat and it had more mojo than most American. It had upgraded Pups too though. Just goes to show you that you can find cheap diamonds in the rough now and then. I just find like Craig said, the pickups are usually the first place you'll notice the quality diff. Some old Les Paul copies are great too. Put a guitar in the right hands and it will sound great no matter what.
