What to buy? Thought I was ready to pull the trigger on a SR, then talked to a couple of people who had QRs with 2x12 cabs and swore by the setup. Complete indecisiveness on my part, and I hate it.

I love the quickrod and 2x12 setup, never played a street rod but loading seperate pieces is better for my back and I just bring a backup head instead of another combo for backup. Just what works for me and I love it

I don't like combos so I decided to look for a used Quickrod head since they are much easier to find than a used Streetrod head. Seems like all I can find are SR combos. I don't gig any longer due to family and career obligations, but I play a lot at home and go to jam sessions and would rather just grab the head. I am curious though if the Quickrod sounds the same as the SR, assuming both are made the same year. So would a 2011 QR sound like a 100 watt verison of the SR?

Both sound amazing ( I own both). Sometimes when I gig I want the QR....sometimes the SR......The QR being a 100 watter just has a slightly different growl to it. Their sounds are NOT far apart by any means, but there are some differences. For example, the SR has more gain than my QR. The great thing is that no matter how you cut it, the so called difference sounds great!

Hey Tuskerkevin, thanks for the help. What are the tonal differences? I can't afford to spend more than about $1,200 on a used head and used SR heads are hard to come by. My cabs are a Marshall with V30/T75 mix, Bogner 212 with V30s and a THD with a K100/CL80 mix. Do you like the Manowar and Gov's? I don't want to spend a lot. Problem is, I love V30s and all my cabs have some 30s other than my THD. I guess I could dedicate a 212 to the Splawn if I get one. Splawns have a very 80s sound which is the one thing that bothers me. I am not a big 80s metal guy. My favorite hard rock tones are out of the 90s, STP, Tool, Alice in Chains, etc. big Cantrell fan.

Hey man! Tonally they are very similar, whereas the Nitro has more low end...more of a modern sound. I LOVE my eminence X patterned cabs. They are exactly what I love and they are the only cabs/speakers I will buy. The only time I liked V30 with my Splawns was with a Rivera cab that had them in it. I don't really know why, but it sounded AWESOME! Good luck!

Thanks brother! If the QR and SR are that close and I can get a 2011 QR head used for $1200, this might be a no brainer. I need to see if I can get creamy lead tones and if it can handle modern rock rather than just 80s tones. Like what I hear so far.

I don't have any experience with the SR, but my QR is anything but a one-trick pony. My band does a lot of STP tunes, some AIC, Foo Fighters, etc. along with some 80's stuff and the QR covers it all quite well. Mine is an '09 (with volume loop) and I read a while back Scott said that model years '08 and later have a little more gain and saturation on tap than previous model years. With the three gear voicings, OD1/OD2, etc. and an '08 or later model I think you'd be fine. Erik Turner (Warrant), Steve Stevens and Tony Rombola (Godsmack) all play(ed) QR's and each get different tones out of 'em.

If you really need "90s" tones,
need Mesa Boogie or Engl, V30s, and EMG pkups. You seem to have the speakers covered. The quickrod is more of marshall tone, but I think some bands did use them. Cantrell is a marshall guy I understand, so if you got the same speaker, I would think the Splawn would get you there.
Good luck!

Thanks guys, I have realized I am more of a Marshall guy overall and that is important. Mesa Boogies I have always found difficult for me to solo on. I did hear the later QRs are more gainy, saturated and darker than earlier ones, more like the SR. I would have to buy a new cab with speakers to match or just get a used SR head. I do love for rhythm tones, those big aggressive Mesa Boogie, Fryette or Diezel tones, but I struggle soloing on them! Tony Rombolla of Godsmack plays a Quickrod? I am surprised since he was a Dual Rec guy forever. I can not imagine his tone without one. What about filling up sonic space? Marshall type amps like the Splawn can sound a little narrow and cutting so they don't fill out a one guitar band like a Boogie would. Well, these are some songs or bands we do and see if you guys think I can pull it off. Van Halen, STP - Down, Godsmack - Greed, Tool - Sober, Creed - Torn, old Zeppelin, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Fuel - Empty Spaces, Pearl Jam, Rush, Metallica, AC/DC, and so on......so a variety. I think any amp can work but it is key to pick what works for us as players, rather than trying to copy song tones. A friend of mine played in a modern rock cover band and all he used were various Marshalls, so anything CAN work. Other amps I am considering are the Mesa Mark V and Fryette SigX. This sounds good. I think he is using a Splwn QR: www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKROlUWkbsQ
