Hey fellow Splawners! I love the tone of my Nitro, but at times I wish it had a little less saturation in the preamp. (maybe less fuzz/fizz is better to describle?) I play pretty much anything from country to Modern hard rock with it. Very happy with it for the most part, havent found another amp that touches the tone the Nitro can put out.
I guess im kinda wondering if maybe the quickrod, Pro-mod or street rod would be something id be looking for. Also kinda looking for a little more aggression in the upper mids, not much, but a little. The nitro has ballsy lower mids which is awesome too... Anyways, enough babbling, suggestions anybody??

Hi Joe,
The quickrod is more the "classic british" tone, and IMO very balanced in compression, saturation, tightness. You could try a weaker preamp tube in one of the positions, like a 5751, NOS 12ax7 or a 12ay7. I had one of those Randall RM100 with the superfizz gain modules, and that cleaned them right up. I get a nice texture from using the black plate type NOS 12ax7 in my QR. I use them in V1 and 2, but if you get a tube, try all 4 positions.
Also, if you want the modern Celestion V30 midrange, get a vintage 30 speaker. That is really where that sound you hear everywhere is coming from.
Good luck!

I'll try swapping around some tubes. I already have a Bogner 4x12 loaded with v30's, sounds alright thru that cab, but I very much prefer running the nitro thru my 2x12 Splawn w/SB25's or my Marshall 1960B with greenbacks.
Im just thinking that I would be in heaven with the Quickrod or streetrod, maybe even a promod.

Try putting a 12AT7 tube in V1 position. It's less saturated tube than a 12AX7.

I've only used a Electro Harmonix and it sounded great. I think they will all sound similarly cleaner. I would go with any decent tube company like JJ or Sovtek etc.

I talked to Eurotubes about the over abundance of saturation in my Nitro and they recommended the 12DW7 to smooth it out. I'm going to buy a couple and experiment with the different gain stages.

I used the last of my long plate radiotrons about 10 years back. I use Sovtek LPS now but haven't tried them in the nitro yet. They did wonders for my SL-X, but I was boosting that amp because it was as flabbby as the south end of a north-bound walrus.

JAN Phillips 5751 www.dougstubes.comIf that doesn't work for ya, pull the 5751 out and trade your Nitro for someones Quick Rod. Shouldn't be too hard.

Ive been debating between a quickrod and streetrod for a few weeks now... Plan to keep the Nitro, but get rid of my Bogner Shiva as I never play it.

I was told a weaker tube, in this case an old RCA 12AT7, in the phase inverter slot would warm up some fizz, give some sag and a fatter tone. Haven't tried it yet, just passing it on.
