I'm think of taking the Splawn plunge and was wondering if the Nitro needs to be boosted to get your typical super tight metal tone, not more gain just to tighten things up. I'm currently using a Spider Valve (which I hate, I needed something cheap and fast when a broken drain pipe made short work of my JSX) that I boost with a Green Rhino. A lot of what I hear on the web sounds like it needs no boost at all and others say they boost it. Any input would be great.

My Nitro has huge amounts of usable gain, I never need to boost it but alot of guys on here prefer to use one to change the attack and it works great. You'll find alot of players do the same thing to tighten up the Dual Rectifiers, although IMO the Nitros are super tight sounding already, even with the massive gain they have. A boost does help if you want a quieter high gain sound cause most get real noisy on full gain without some kind of noise gate.

I just turn the resonance knob all the way down and my Nitro gets as tight as I need. If you need to boost a Nitro then you should really work on your picking technique.

I boost my Nitro. It's got plenty of gain but I like the feel when boosted. It's a little less stiff. I run the amp with the gain at noon or less and boost as needed. Boosting just gives me more options that would not be available otherwise. My Nitro is a 2008 so I am not sure how it compares to newer models.

I boost mine too. Totally kicks ass. I use a maxon od808 with the gain all the way down and the level all the way up. Tone set to taste. I find that aside from the way it changes the feel of the attack and the gain options, it also gives me more punch in the mix. The nitro is real heavy in the low mids and the od808 gives me the mid/high mid bump that all tubescreamers have.
I don't boost it all the time but having the od808 in my rack gives me one more option. I only use one amp live (the nitro), so I use a TC electronic nova drive on my clean channel to do all my low gain and mid gain sounds, and I can boost any of those with the maxon, and on the od channel I have the od1, od2, boosted od1 (personal favorite) and boosted od2 sounds available. It turns my heavy metal beast of an amp into a really versatile live rig.
