Looking for some input, constructive or otherwise. This is not quite all QR though, I mixed in my 5150 III for some of the rhythm parts. The little lead doodle at the start is 3rd gear, OD 2. This really just started as a crunch rhythm doubling test with both amps (5150 III channel 2/Quick Rod 1st gear) but since they blended better than I hoped I figured I'd try them together in a short (0:45) full mix. Thanks. Full Mix / save as

A stray forward slash in your link makes it not work. I figured out it was meant to go here: 208.106.174.111/music/Amp_Blending_Mix.mp3Sounds good to me. Nice squeezy kind of sound from third. The Splawn seems to have more shape to the notes the less gain you can get away with, though, flattens out a bit on third, so I'd guess it'd sound even better ramped down to first or second. Nice smoothness there, mind you, and it's appealingly warm. I wasn't wild about the original demos I heard of the 5153, seemed oddly grainy, but that 50 watt $999 mini head they're bringing out is an attractive little proposition. Would like to test one.

Ahh, thanks for catching that! Not sure how I goofed the link up but it's fixed now. I also tried a less gritty setting on the 5153 for the intro chords (and later at 0:37), though I didn't double them as tightly this time, was a rush job, lol. Thing about the 5150 III, they ALL seem to hit stores with an ultra cold bias...everyone who buys one, gets it home, checks the bias reports the same thing: "COLD!" It seems Fender is notorious for shipping amps this way from the factories. Not sure why they would do that with a high gain amp though, only hurts sales in the end, but they do, heh. I knew this going in so I wasn't nervous about the purchase. And sure enough, once I got it home and checked, it was at 15ma !! But then naturally when cranked up to a more proper 30ma, it sings nicely! Finding it a great compliment to the QR. Now that I spent the time to make the little backdrop, I can go back and sample different lead settings over it, but so far, I am liking the 3rd gear tone (gain way back at 12:00). 1st gear is awesome as everyone and his brother knows, but for truly over the top saturated gain for shreddy stuff, I'd need a pedal - with 3rd gear, it's 'there.'

Yes,
you have a nice Satriani/Vai thing going on there, hope that was what you were aiming for. The breakup is pretty nice on the milder sound.

Thanks for the listen/comment, speedemon! Wasn't actually going for anything other than good tone! If it sounds similar to mid-career Satch then I'd be tickled, lol, that is when he sounded best IMO...and yep, sometimes when dialing in lead tones, I do sample his 'Summer Song' sound (Soldano?), I love that tone.

Ok then, had to bump this as I finally got around to trying your suggestion. Same little track I tossed together for the first clip, just played another take over it with 1st gear and a different guitar. Definitely sounds better to me now! 1st Gear Do-Over / Save As

See, now, as soon as that starts I'm squinting my eyes and contorting my mouth to make a series of guitar faces. That's tone you can get your jaws around.
Went back and listened to the other one and yeah, this is more engaging, all that shape to the notes.
I totally just produced you. ^_^

So, reading your old Charvel thread, that's the Duncan Custom I'm hearing? Sounds smooth for a ceramic. I still haven't settled on a bridge pup for mine.

Damn your ears. I wish I had your ears! Nope, you're not hearing the Duncan Custom, that is long gone, the 2010 white Charvel I have is back to basics (as far as I'm concerned, lol)...a very old Super Distortion and PAF Pro (which you are hearing on the rhythm tracks here). THIS new clip (Charvel Lead Test) is actually a new Charvel! I picked this up last weekend. A really sweet find actually! These are fairly rare, only made in 95/96 from what I gather. US Charvel San Dimas IIIw. Mahogany body/maple top, Birdseye maple neck, Pau Ferro fretboard, EMG pickups, Sperzel Locking Tuners and a Wilkinson Tremelo. I've never been an EMG fan, just figured I'd be replacing them, right, I mean I wanted the guitar, that was a given, the pups were simply an afterthought. But whoa, wait a sec, a major surprise happened, they sounded great, and they clean up really nice when rolled back (one of the things I just assumed about EMG's not being good). I don't know jack about EMG, lol, don't even know what model these are, I just know I like the sound. There's a nifty little toggle switch that splits the neck and middle pickups (which are actually humbuckers via stacking) so they can work either way, humbucking or single.

But... but what are you putting in it when you take the EMGs out?

I hate bumping my own thread but I'm dying to know now if I've improved upon the previous clips or if I made things worse. It's more or less the same jam thingy, just slightly different tempo/feel and a wee bit different amp settings. I "THINK" I like this tone even bettter now (compared to the above clips), seems a little more spongey but without the same mid hump, still has the same clarity though. thanks Finished Mix / save as
