1.Turn the gain down 2. See number 1
Went from running my gain at 2 oclock to somewhere between 10-11 oclock at my last gig and it really sounded much better. I felt I could hear more of the character of the guitar with less gain. I'm also a boostaholic and the OD 1/OD 2 has always seemed like a total waste to me......until I dialed the gain back.
I still run a TS9 in front of the Nitro but I do not reach for it as much. When I do it has a much more pronounced effect ( go figure) than what I had been experiencing. Less amp gain paired with a good boost gave me way more tonal options.
I've always wanted that liquidy solo/shred tone out of my rigs but in hindsight a lot of shredders really don't have good tone. My shredding dreams are few and far between these days anyway. Funny how age changes things.

Yeah, I found the same thing. I run the gain pretty high on my QR until the amp gets hot, then back it off. If your picking is in order, noon is plenty of gain on any gear. The Nitro I am sure, moreso. Although, I have found that actually lots of exposure to lead singers is more of a cause than age to turning my back on shredding! lol

I'm right there with you. I always wonder why people always seem to run their gain at 3:00 or so on a Nitro. I don't ever take it past noon. Any higher than that and it looses a lot of attack and definition and gets really mushy. I like the amount of gain that's there at about 10:00 but it feels like the amp is getting starved Maybe I really need a QuickRod.

If you want a QR I have one that I have seriosly considered letting go of. Its in the classifieds. QR has loads of gain but is not a modern voiced amp which better suits my needs.

So based on this discussion I got home last night and dialed the gain back to 11:00. What a great sound that is. I kept my Maxon od808 in front of the amp and also put a put little compression before the maxon (to help some of the harmonics pop a little more due to the new lower gain setting.
Great tone. Thanks for sharing.

I was boosting mine with a BB Preamp with the Mid Boost. I recently got a Timmy pedal and I'm loving that alot more. The difference is amazing. I thought the Xotic was transparent until I started a/bing with the Timmy.

I also have a new bb pre with the mid control.it is a great OD and is very transparent but I like the flavor the tubeslammer adds to the nitro.it also sounds mean running into my buddys laboga...

I have an Xotic BB. Love that pedal. I sold my Analogman Kot , Xotic RC and Fulltone OCD last week. I never really gelled with any of those pedals. I still have a few modded Sd-1s and a JYM308 that has been modded by Analogman and Outlier. I think I will be parting with all of those soon too though.

Im considering trading my ISP G String for a Keeley modded SD-1 plus cash from him think Id like the SD-1 better than my OD808 with my Quickrod?

I have two analogman modded SD1 pedals and I actually prefer the Zakk wylde OD. The ZW was great with my QR. The SD1 are good but leave me kind wanting more. YEMV

I thought the Xotic was transparent until I started a/bing with the Timmy. I’ve heard a few people say this. I should just put my order in for a Timmy and do a shootout between that and the RC Boost. I started out playing my PM at Gear 2, OD 2, and gain at 3:00 at gigs. Now after 4 or 5 years I live in Gear 1, OD1 gain at noon! I hit it with a treble booster or RC Boost if I want a little more out of it. I am really digging the clarity and openness of the low gain settings

Not a modern voiced amp...I hear that said but I just don't get it. It works great with the 7s I play and covers our music very well.

Everytime I played my QR I wanted to hear the mid lows of my Nitro. If I did not own the Nitro I probably would have thought differently of the QR. In the end I never did gel with it and sold it last july. Lot of guys report to play modern stuff on the QR and I am sure the results are great. My ears are more in line with the voicing of the Nitro is all.

I wish there was a Splawn that had the best of both worlds. The snugness of the Nitro with the mid voicing of the Quickrod. Two channels, 100 watts, Nitro clean, tube buffered loop, with one gain voicing with OD1 and OD2 like a Nitro, a separate master volume post phase inverter with depth and presence controls on the power section. Ruby EL34BG or BHT tubes. Call it the "Downshift". Voiced for drop tuned modern rock tight chugga, chugga, palm mute rhythm guys with mids to spare. No loop volume or other stuff. Just a straight forward tone machine. Plug and play. No boost or other eq stuff needed to get the boom and cab farts to go away. Just an in your face super tight thwack to ride along with crazy syncopated double kick patterns on songs. "Alarm clock goes off and I wake up realizing I was dreaming". Maybe Scott and Co will read this and will let me test the first Downshift amp.
