For those looking to get a little more saturation to their Splawn at times I wanted to offer the suggestion of using a treble booster. I mention it because most people wouldn’t think to look into these for boosting high gain amps. Despite the name, a good treble booster doesn’t have to actually boost treble!
The key is to buy, build, or have someone make you a treble booster with a variable gain knob. I had one built into an enclosure by a great pedal builder friend from another forum and have been absolutely loving it into gear 1/OD-1.
I consider it a fuzz-lite, where the boost uses germanium transistors to get a warm yet slightly gritty, fuzzy OD. It may not be the tone for everyone but a cool sound nonetheless. Mine is based off of the very expensive DAM Red Rooster and has 3 knobs; volume, gain, and range. I think well selected germanium diodes are also key to getting the warmth and thickness. Check one out if you get the chance.

Heresey! My right hand is all the boost I need. And I just realized how that must sound.

For every hour I work on my alternate picking a germanium diode bursts into flames.

oh boy, sorry for mentioning it! lol Pro tip: you can have good technique and still use pedals for different tones. The more you know...

Germanium diodes? What treble booster uses diodes for clipping? Do you mean germanium transistor by chance? If someone is incorporating diodes, then they've built a fuzz or overdrive for you.
If I am not mistaken, some treble boosts as used by Ritchie Blackmore had silicon transistors. I'm building a copy of the Hornby-Skewes treble booster with the mods said to be done on Ritchie's treble booster. I've put in sockets for the portions that are modded in case I don't care for or have to otherwise tweak the sound.
There's a photo of one of Ritchie's HS treble boosters in a special issue of Young Guitar magazine in which a control is added with a Marshall amp knob. This, it's assumed was an output control (HS treble boosters didn't have one). So I'm adding that as well.
After I finish this one, I'll build one with the PNP transistor. I've avoided that for the first one as I didn't feel like dealing with a positive ground.

It’s an NPN Ge transistor, I want to say easy face or OC71? I'll try and find a gut shot. That Blackmore RM sounds cool! Post a pic when you are done

Since we can't all be Dirrty Craig, I have started using a GE7 for leads. Someday when I am doing gigs that last longer than warming up the amp, I will be ditching it. lol
