I am personally aware how each and every one of you find yourselves wondering how the sound of a cab differs when decoupled from the floor on a riser, so I made this video today.
I was pretty surprised how much the bass of my amp is actually the bass of my floor. All settings are the same with and without the riser.
The "riser" by the way is a furniture moving dolly I got from Home Depot for $20. Exact width of a 2x12.

(You can hear the LP neck pickup clipping the cam mic at the end with all the extra bass, which goes away when it's on the riser right after.)

That looks to be about 130mm - 150mm off the floor right ? (just a guess) Sooooooo maybe there's an opening for an invention ! ? Hook up your cab to a "Lift" via ya Foot switch !!!!! - Toooooooo Easy ! You want deep Bass - Click "lower" and it drops to the floor ! You want high's - Click "up" and Walhaaa ! Well looks like dad is off to knock one of these things up ! ;D (with the young blokes help of course) Great Video mate ! Thank you for taking the time to do this !

You might just be crazy, father of Cam. ;D
If you really are going to try it, make sure the amp head is not on the cab; hot tubes don't like to be jostled!

Cool video. A while back (I forget exactly how long ago) I posted about a noticeable difference in cab response with and without casters attached. Definitely more bass response w/o casters. I experimented for a while and found I generally prefer the sound with casters attached. More bite and I can still dial up a bit more bass if I need it.

Nifty little test/video! I think I kinda like the caster tone more FWIW. Its not that there is more clarity that way because both ways have seemingly equal amounts of that...it's just the effect of less info down low happening that I like - that tone would sit so well in full mix/band. The floor version is still sweet and resonate and I could be happy with that all day long if all I ever did was just play/record solo'd out guitar, but eh, who does that.

Thanks lads. I prefer the off-the-floor tone too, have kept the cab up there ever since. It is clearer to me, and I like how the controls respond a bit better too, now that the low end of my tone isn't the floor. if all I ever did was just play/record solo'd out guitar, but eh, who does that.

I have been contemplating getting something like this. I can’t watch the vid at work but did you do the pre-riser test with the casters on? My Pm w/ KT88’s can get a little overwhelming on the bass freqs with the 4x12 at gig volume.

Hey, doll.
It's my 2x12 directly on the floor (no castors) then up on the riser (which has castors) then alternating between the two with the same bits of music.
What speakies have you got in your fourbie?

digging the furniture dolly! i have the exact same thing i use to roll my gear around and put my cab on at shows. never payed much attention to it at home, but could tell the difference in a live setting. i almost always have my rig on the dolly!
