I talked to Michael and asked him about SPLAWN. He Said he has heard of but not tried one. I urged him to do so and put those distortion pedals away lol. Here is my newest SPLAWN that puts me in the Streetrod club also. A very different beast from a quickrod. Much more gain & sustain. Clean Channel is more broken up,forgiving and not as stiff as my quickrod. All in all: AWESOME

Definitely. I would say that at noon it is what my Quickrod was at 2:30. It is really evident on gear 1 od1 where the Quickrod would be set for crunch/med breakup the streetrod starts singing. Lots of harmonics and controllable feedback! There are some small + and minuses (mostly +s) But for a smaller gig not a arena I would choose Streetrod. They are like offspring I love equally even for their differences! We have tone partys in my city where everyone brings their new killer boutique amps. One is coming up and my streetrod is wringing it's hands together like a madman!

2008 4 tube preamp, no loop volume. I Don't miss it. I have been told the new Quickrods are more like the gain type of the Streetrod. That would be a good thing IMO.

My educated guess about the gain difference is you are getting output tube distortion more in the SR simply because 40 watts has no where near the headroom of the 100 watts of the QR, so i suspect it doesnt really have that much more gain, just that the SR is breaking up WAY sooner than the QR.

Scott told me the "extra gain" is from higher plate voltages on the SR......

Well, i suspect that Dr Splawn knows his stuff about his amps especially, i know my JCM 800 2204 is 50 watts and has a bit more hair than the 2203 of the same year. The 2203 is a 100 watter.

I checked my SR plate voltage. It is much lower than my quickrod. I wrote down the numbers and will post them when I get home ( I can't remember but I know they were lower like 380 maybe). Also I was told that the new quickrods ARE different and have a gain structure more like the SR so it's not just the headroom that makes them have more apparent gain. I'll say it again, I LOVE my SR If you are a player that does Sweep arpeggios, harmonic tricks etc, The SR is a lot friendlier and easier to play. Softer/smoother on the fingers I would say with all the PLEXI/early Marshall sound and no less bite. When you flick it on 20W it really changes the tone/feel a ton more than the QR does at half power. Even softer and darker. Kind of takes on a different boutique amp sound.
