Hey guys,
I finally pulled the trigger on a Streetrod after 8 months of sitting on the fence. I've owned a couple of QR's (still have one) so I'm familiar with Scott's design/quality. I was looking for a combo that I could use at gigs without blowing the roof off and the SR seemed to be the ticket.
So here it is (forgive the pic quality - taken moments after unpacking it. Oh, and nothing wrong with the grill cloth, just a piece of foam. :-) Once again, I'm impressed with how well built Scott's amps are. Just solid from top to bottom. I plug it in, sounds unbelievable - and I love the loop volume. I am all set and can't wait to unleash this at the next couple of shows - but now that I have, I'm a little disappointed. I can't tell if I'm not dialing it in correctly or what and I figured that I would ask the experts.
Okay, here's the issue. I've now used it at two gigs and while I was blown away at home, I'm having a hard time dialing it in at shows. First of all, the clean channel seems to break up really early. In fact, I couldn't have been more than 9 o'clock on the volume on the clean channel and it was really starting to crunch up. The only way I could get a decent usable clean was to only use the split coil and ride the volume knob. (I use Anderson Cobras). If I switch to either bridge or neck humbuckers, it's too much. It's a good thing that I wasn't using my Les Pauls b/c I wouldn't have been able to get a decent clean sound. I understand that this isn't really the Splawn's forte but unfortunately, I need a usable clean for this gig.
The clean channel shouldn't break up THAT much, should it? I realize that it's a fixed gain level since it doesn't have a gain pot but this doesn't seem right. My QR can stay pretty clean at higher volumes pretty easily. Granted, the QR is higher powered and the SR is 40 watts but this doesn't seem quite right. Maybe swap out the 12ax7 for something lower gain - at7 or au7? Is it the speaker...?
The second issue is the bass on either channel. It sounded like the speaker was breaking up b/c the bass freq. was incredibly woofy. I kept dialing back the bass throughout the night and was never quite satisfied. I think I ended up with the bass on the crunch side at about 11 o'clock but it still didn't sound as "tight" as my QR. I know that Splawns have that big bass thing going on but this seemed too much. Even with the bass/mids dialed back some, it just didn't seem that the crunch was clean and tight like my QR.
So is this an EQ thing or is this typical of the Small Block speaker?
Again, the SR sounded absolutely awesome at bedroom volumes and I didn't even think that everything would be out of whack by the time I hit the gig - but it was. Anybody have any suggestions?
Thanks, fellas!
