Well, it came!
Nitro, reddish brown snakeskin! Very pimp-a-delic. Got this head and cab in a trade deal. Never played a Splawn before. Took it up to the rehersal space so I could crank it. I had to use an Avatar 2x12" with a V30 and a G12H30, as the Splawn cab is not wired up yet - it has one Splawn small block in it, empty on the other side.
First off, I was very happy to find that the gain level was very manageable! I play hard rock, not metal. Even with the gain half way, it still wasn't too gainy for my likes.
It's loud! Not news, right? Turning the gain to half, volume to 9:00 o'clock, buzz goes away and amp smooths out nicely. Great sustain - it made me want to play leads all night. Being used to more JCM800 gain levels and sound, the Nitro has the lower miss thing going on - not used to that. I hope I don't interfere with our bass player! The resonance knob is very interesting as well. I dialed in a great rock tone immediately, and easily.
The clean channel is great! I wasn't expecting that. I do wish it had an overall master volume that controls both channels, but that's being picky. Love the cleans.
The biggest surprise to me was the FX loop. I have a Maxon AD80 delay, a Vox Time Machine delay, and a Malekko Spring Chicken reverb in my loop. Each sounded better than it ever did through my Reinhardt Storm's loop. Fantastic! Absolutely the best FX loop I have ever used.
I have a Omnisonic volume box coming in the mail - I hope that it will work to control the volume without sacrificing tone.
I need to get another speaker for the Splawn cab. Here's my question - I have one Splawn small block. I could just get one more. I do not want a dark speaker(s). Are small blocks dark? I do not want to mix speakers - both the same for me. What speakers would get me a bright, clear tone with no harshness? I would like to try 2 small blocks if they aren't too dark. What do y'all think?
I'm gonna try the Nitro with the band Tuesday - we'll see!
Oh - as you can see, no Splawn logo's on head or cab.
I hope Scott will sell me a couple to put on!
Cheers!
