Hey, everyone. I just scored a Nitro in a trade deal, should be here in a week or so. I'm excited! Anyway, I really wanted a QR, but couldn't make a deal fir one, so I went ahead with the Nitro. Here's the question - I play in a hard rock band - gain levels in the Gn'R territory or Alice in Chains- not metal, just hard rock style. Will the Nitro do a good job of this? It has KT88's in it now. Would el34's bring it into hard rock territory? Or are the KT88's fine? Along with the head, I have a Splawn 2x12" cab coming in. It is unloaded. What speakers do y'all recommend for a good hard rock sound? Small blocks? Thanks, y'all!

EL34s and Small Blocks would help yes.

You can get decent rock tones with 88's. You get a little more bass thump than with 34's.
More important (I think) than your tube choice is gonna be that the nitro is voiced for a slightly scooped lower mid-centric tone. You may want to do something that help the rig focus on upper mids a little. That could be a pedal, an EQ or just careful tweaking with knobs but it's important that you're aware of this.
Also speaker choice is important. The small blocks have a generally darker sound (from what I understand...I don't own them). If I were you I'd call splawn and ask what try think about speaker choice. They know best and they're happy to help.

Thanks, yall! I think I will call Mr. Splawn and ask him. I am so stoked about trying this amp! Fastredponycar on YouTube has some great sounding medium gain clips of the Nitro. EQ pedal in the loop to get some upper mids. Thanks!

I play in a prog metal band and a cover band and my nitro is my main head for both groups. With some pedal tweaking my nitro does the tones for the cover band no problem...and it obviously handles the prog metal no sweat.

The Splawn small blocks are great sounding with the Nitro. This may not be a popular recommendation but If you get a chance, try some V30,Eminence Governors or Marshall G12-Vintage speakers. I thought they sounded great with my Nitro and they will add some mids. From what you mentioned, the QR would probably be a little better and more versatile(because of the gears) than the Nitro, but the Nitro is a killer amp. You may be able to do a trade too. Your Nitro for a QR.

Thanks y'all for the great info! I actually have a 2x12" with a Vintage 30 and a G12H30 that I will try it with (1/2 power, not too loud) to see how it sounds. If it is too much amp for me, I may try to swap - head and cab for a Streetrod, or head for a Competition head or QR or something. I may love it as is - who knows. It's sure gonna be fun trying it out! Just bought an Omnisonic volume box for the loop today, should be here in a few days.
