it sounds absolutely amazing. i haven't quite had a chance to turn it up though because it is 3am.
i have a couple of questions though, and need tube suggestions.
the OD1/OD2 switch switches to the next gear right? so that means it has three gears plus a boost, if i have the gear on three and the OD2 selected?
what would you all recommend for preamp tubes? they are about five years old, as the seller told me. which tubes could make it a little more gainy and slightly darker?
thanks for the help in advance, Derek

The Gear switch selects which gear you're in and the OD1/OD2 switch selects which OD mode. So... you could be in any one of the three gears and switch from OD1 to OD2. I'm pretty sure the Splawn foot switch is set up so you can automatically go into OD2 when hitting the Solo Boost switch.

Congrats on ProMod. I got mine a couple months ago and that thing is a monster!! As, sasquatch mentioned above, the solo switch on the pedal automatically turns on the OD2 function.
I have always thought that the amount of gain was most primarily effected by the structure and of the amp. So I am not sure what you should use as far as that goes. I am using the regular 12ax7 in my pre-amp section and I have plenty of gain. But I also prefer to drive my power section as opposed to my pre-amp section (hard to do with the PM).
I have read that Tung sol preamp tubes are pretty high gain but have not personally experimented.
Good luck!

Hey Derek, it's 311 from UG :wavey: If you are talking about the footswitch, then you can't switch gears with the footswitch. You do that on the amp. I'm guessing you've already figured all of this out. OD1/OD2 on footswitch does give you boost in any gear as does the solo switch. Set the Solo volume to a bit higher than your Channel volume. You may also want to consider a volume pedal or suck knob to give your amp an overall Master volume. I really like JJs in the preamp and I think you will too. I've been experimenting with a 5751 as well. Tung Sols, especially in the preamp, are way too bright for me. Maybe get with Laura at www.valvequeen.com, she owns a Nitro along with a bunch of other kick ass amps. Also, hit up the QuickRod subforum here as that is pretty much what you have and that forum moves a lot quicker and has a ton of good info. Welcome to splawnfans and I can't wait to hear some clips

thanks 311. i guess splawndude on here now...
where could i buy a good "suck knob" what exactly does it do?
it certainly a little too loud to get ideal tone at normal bedroom levels (and in about half of the gigging situations).
is that what it comes with? JJ's?
i definitely will stay away from tongsols, i much prefer a darker tone.

The 'Loop Volume' trick is what I am talking about. There is an extensive thread on the subject in the FAQ subforum but basically it gives your amp an overall Master Volume (or additional volume knob). You can use the volume box like below or a volume pedal. I've tried both. The Splawns are like the traditional Non-Master Volume Marshall amps so they have a volume and a gain control for each channel but not a master volume that sits after the preamp and before the power amp like you would see in most amps that controls the overall master volume of both channels. Basically it allows you to crank up the power amp section like you would do for a gig and then use that loop volume to bring it back down to bedroom levels. I don't really hear a lot of tone suckage using this trick but lots of people complain about them. I don't use one anymore for all intensive purposes because I'm stripping everything down to the basics and don't need it. The 2010 models now have the loop volume knob built into the amp. Not all Splawns ship with JJ's and if yours is used there is no telling what it has. You'll have to take the back off of the amp and unscrew the aluminum cylinders that hold the preamp tubes in place. I just leave mine off as they don't seem to add any value but they can help with reducing noise. But yeah, Splawns are not bedroom amps Here is a pic of my 'suck knob' Omnisocic from eBay. I also had an Ernie Ball Vol Pedal but got rid of it.
