I screwed up my beloved SB25, arrggh! Had to go back to the G12H30. No biggie though, it is another GREAT sounding speaker with the QR - the only hassle was going through the mic positioning thing again and a few amp setting tweaks. VH-ish Tone / Download

Yeah, that does sound nice. Not quite as thin and sizzly as I think of those riffs, a little more 800-like, but a sweet sweet tone. I'm using an H30 right now mixed with a Greenback and loving what it does.
How did you kill your SB? Didn't hit that little guy with 100 watts on his own, did ya?

Thanks for the positive feedback/comments!
I hear ya Ayton regarding the high end, I TRIED to get there - I hear exactly what you do, I just can't quite get it right without crossing the line into speaker fizz territory (which I HATE), hell, I have the prez at 3 o'clock for this. I compromised and ended up with a decent sound I think, in a rock type mix anyway, this would work. (=
The SB25 - complete stupidity on my part! I was running in 100watt mode into a 2x12. I thought keeping the volume low enough (only possible because the loop volume feature works SO WELL) wouldn't cause any problems, even over a lot of time. I guess over the months I just forgot about it and kept creeping my front panel volume up and up....oops. Hard lesson learned. B'bye SB25. I luckily have an ancient 1960a cab (were talkin' 91' model). I slapped 2 well worn H30's in, a v30 and left one of the original/UK G12T-75's put, and for close miking, it's not bad!! I've already made up my mind though and am ordering a pair of Greenbacks, been thinking about that for a while - this just forced my hand, lol!

Hmmm. Are you still crushing volume in the loop when recording? That might be keeping you away from that wide open VH crunch of course. Which guitar/pickup? Are you already micing on the edge of the dust cap, or nearby? It honestly does sound great, I'm just wondering if you could get all the way there. (Good call on the Greenies, my favorite speakers.)

Thanks again. Now with the 4x12 running, I'm keeping it fairly cranked, a TRUE 100watt guy now, lol. The mic's (both a 57 and an e906) are doing the 'nipple ring' thing (the edge of the cap, 50/50 with the cone I guess). The e906 has a switch for essentially dark, balanced, bright - I have it set in the middle, I could try the other setting I guess just for a goof.
EDIT: Charvel So-Cal (alder) with Super Distortion. Gear 1 OD2, no pedals, nothing in loop.

I forgot you were the nipple ring mic technique perv! Man, everything there suggests bags of brightness, I don't know why it's not quite getting to that open sizzle. It's been many years since I played a Super Distortion, but I think they're plenty bright? They are hot though, aren't they. Got anything lower output, more PAFfy? I notice that my weedy-on-paper Alnico II Pro has a lot more open crunchy clang than louder pickups, and I guess VH's was down there in that 7-8k range, wasn't it?
Just let me know when you're not interested in my meddling any more, BTW. ;D
(On a side note I keep meaning to pick up a 57. I want a deal, but the fakes put me off, they look so close.)

I thought that was an industry term, lol! Surprised more folks don't use it, it is a perfect way to envision the mic plaement. (=
I agree, with that setup it should be mucho bright. I love the Super Dist in alder guitars, just has nice mojo and clarity for chords. I guess there are a few things I'm doing keeping it from being sizzly - I'm running the treble off in this clip. To me, the high end sounds a little more open and organic that way unless/until you crank it WAY up there, like beyond 3 o'clock-ish, but then it gets kinda brittle with the gain cranked as well.
I did bump the prez up a couple more ticks and played around a bit, it does sound closer. Not gonna bother tracking it again though, instead, for now I just tried a hint of post EQ to add that. It's better I think (same link). Could prolly use moe reverb too.

I really REALLY dig those VH tones you've got going there, dude.... Thanks man! I mentioned above I know it's not dead on VH but close enough, and in a mix the tone might sound pretty cool anyway...well I got around to trying it. I doubled tracked a simple rhythm (altered one side slightly, went to 3rd, OD 1, backed off the gain, but otherwise left the eq settings as they were - it's a simialr tone to 1st, OD2 but differnt enuff for doubling), no verb added. Oddly though, in a full mix now it no longer sounds VHish but actually reminds me of TNT, lol. I'll take it!!! Don't mind the lame (repetitive) drums, just grabbed a beat from EZ and looped it. Also don't mind the lead tone, it's the other amp in my avatar. I'm fooling around with different guitars through different amps searching for a nice blend, I've already found a thicker (but still articulate) lead tone than the one in this tiny clip: Pre-Mix / Download

that's a JVM you're doing the leads on? Going by the picture and the abundance of knobs....lol
I think I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a quad of SB25s....I've had my greenbacks for a while and I think it's time for a change

Yeah, JVM410, I love that amp as well, still figuring it out, I think it plays nice with the QR.
No doubt, the SB's get much love, they've earned it!

Bump for a little revision, lol. I've been fooling with the amp settings, mic positions, the switch on the e906, etc. Just wondering if I got a little closer now (for this kinda thing) or was the first attempt better? I thought they're too similar at first, especially when listening from the start, but by A/Bing mid way through either clip ( most noticeable on beaut girls), the difference becomes more evident. I think the 'B' take has more warmth but the first sounds nastier? I dunno, neither will be mistaken for dead on VH lol, but both are passable I guess.
