I hate to be that blunt in my thread title but unfortunately thats what im experiencing. I dont know when or how it happened but as of lately im falling very much OUT of love with my nitro. The clean sounds pretty decent but the crunch channel is just totally unusable without a boost in front of the amp.
Ive tried multiple EQ settings and i always get the same or similar results. a very dark, loose, woofy tone that I cant tighten up no matter what. Adding gain only makes it sound worse.
I know that at one point I loved this amp, but lately im getting so annoyed with the way it sounds im ready to sell it for something else.
I'm running a Mesa stiletto 4x12 straight cab for the record.

Seems like I just heard this story. Have you had it long? Does it have the the stock tubes? Someone else here only got about six months(If I remember correctly) out of the stock tubes before he mentioned the same. Power tubes would be my first guess.

Power tubes would be my first guess. i got my Nitro last february so its been getting moderate use for the last 7 months. i dont play in a band so it hasnt been receiving HEAVY use but its been used nonetheless. The power tubes still seem to be glowing a healthy orange color so i dont know whether or not they could be going or not. And yes, all the tubes in my amp are the original ones shipped with it. Ive only replaced one preamp tube when i had one go bad shortly after getting it. The tubes are all Sinos.

Man I hate to say it but I think it's time for new tubes. All of them. Just to be sure. I would be very disappointed if I only got 7 months out of a set of tubes even with heavy use. The fact that they are KT88s hits the wallet even more. This of course is assuming that you checked out everything else. Battery if you have active pups, cables and whatever else you can think of.

Yes,
start with the 12ax7s, they are cheaper! And yes, plenty of time on the QR threads on "China tubes good vs. China tubes bad". I am in the "China tubes bad" camp.
Good luck!

The guitars im using all have Bare Knuckle pups in them so its not a battery issue.
Ugh, I guess ill try a new set of preamp tubes first to see if that helps.
Does anybody know what kinda tonal difference I can expect if i switch from sino 12ax7's to JJ "high gain" preamp tubes?

I put some JJ "high gain" preamp tubes in my Competition and only noticed a very slight difference (if any). I'd most likely just get the regular ones next time.

Thats the truth. I wished they had just" red plated" and blown a fuse. No they just turn to "mud" or thats what they made my amp sound like. I could go on and on but tubes can go anytime. I just bought a pair and had one blow within 3 days or so. Easy fix, good luck guy.

contact Josh or Scott at the store and see what they say.
mud and loose gain are the last two things you should have.
maybe the bias drifted?

i agree and think new tubes are gonna solve the problem, i been there a few times and when my amps are dull and weak sounding 90% of the time i needed new tubes, i had worn tubes that had no life left in them but they still glowed and looked ok. i even had tubes turn sh!tty in 3 months. it sucks when it happens with the kt88 because they are so expensive but i think they are the best sounding tube for the nitro, check your bias on the current tubes na dsee if they are biased too hot because that might have caused them to wear quicker.

Can you take all the tubes to comeone who can test them? ? Properly? One farked up toob will give you all those problems most likely, whether its a pre or power tube.

ah ok...well i may just take that advice...just cant freaking believe a quartet of kt88's lasted only 7 months In order for that to happen you would probably have to play the amp CRANKED FULL BLAST with those tubes for like 10 hours a day in order for them to go bad. You may just have farked up toobs dude. ... Let us know what happens. My Rod is far from muddy and I have sh!t tubes, so I can't imagine a Nitro being muddy.
