So.... I was playing today and messed around with my EQ settings on my Competition and something REALLY strange happened... I turned my treble ALL the way off, and my amp suddenly got a good deal LOUDER... Never had this happen with an amp before, and I'm wondering if there's some sort of wiring problem with the amp... Can anyone shed some insight on this? Thinking about calling Scott, even though I've never talked to him before.. Bought this puppy used on EBay,and I love it,but i wonder if someone messed around with its innards! Whatcha think?

I just wanted to tell you this doesn't happen on mine. You sure you don't just have some dying tubes going wild? Is it repeatable, i.e. every time you raise the treble the amp gets louder?
I'd call the shop and explain it. I feel like the mid control can affect volume a bit, but that's less of a surprise as Splawn is mids, right? ;D

Tubes don't sound bad... It's CRAZY, like something is up with the EQ, or something..Every time i turn the treble all the way off, the amp gets LOUDER,and there's really still enough treble that the amp still sounds good...I have the presence at about 2:00.. Bought this used about a year ago on Ebay from a flipper, so I don't know it's history.. When I get a day off, I'm going to call the shop and ask what they think.. Great amp, though...This baby is going to STAY my higher gain amp, and I've been running it together with a Grainger Plexi clone and loving the results!!!!! The two really compliment each other..

Thanks for responding by the way, really appreciate it! If you don't mind me asking, what power tubes are you running in your Compy? I'm shooting for more of a vintage Schenker/Thin Lizzy tone, and I wonder if the Valve Arts EL-34b's that I've got in here are recommended... Thanks again!

No problem, I just didn't like to see you left hangin'. There's not many of us Competition guys around here to bounce questions off. I'm running Mullard EL34s in there. That's all I've ever used in it though, for three years, so I'm afraid my experience there is limited! Splawns shipped with Mullards back then. I love my tone so I just keep using them. You'll find the guys friendly and helpful at the shop. Good luck diagnosing.

I have never had that problem on my Competion before but i did on a solid state Marshall, sounds as if you may be losing a pot, what I mean by this is, that when the pot gets dirty and hits a dead spot there is nothing to control that part of the eq, you didn't say whether or not the pot was scratchy or if there was any noise coming from it when you turned it up or down. Just a thought. Contact cleaner helped my Marshall.

I've never tried a Competition but have played through 3 different Nitro's and all 3 did it when the treble was turned off. It wasn't a big volume jump but noticeable, I thought it sounded pretty good though. Could it be the interactive controls, such as when turning down the treble the mids increase and in turn making the amp sound louder? Just taking a wild guess here.. Update: Just got my Competition today and I'm not experiencing this at all with this head.

I run my Quick Rod with the treble all the way down but never experience a volume spike. 'How much' louder are you talking about? Others have described liking the tone better with the Treble turned all the way down but I've never heard of volume spike because of it....on any amp.
Shoot, I just realized this thread is a bit old - bomber1970 what ever came of this?

Just noticed the age of the thread myself, probably has it figured out by now. Next time will look closer, LOL

So....I had a Power Tube go out the other day....Guess that was the source of this...Ha ha! Had Valve Arts EL34B's in there, wondering what i should try in there now....Looking for more of an old Schenker era UFO tone...I wonder what will give me more of a vintage-y vibe? I understand that this beast is what it is, and I happy about that....But.. Never tried the Mullards.. Whatcha think?
