hey everyone, i wanna pick up a pro stock soon but not sure what tubes to get. to my understanding the KT88s are supposed to be a little bit more aggressive than the EL34s, is this true? what other tonal differences are there between the two kinds? also, if i get a pro stock with KT88s, and just say i dont like em for whatever reason, would i be able to switch them out for the EL34s? thanks, and any input would be helpful.

In my experience, KT88s are slightly brighter, more articulate, and can push a little more volume -- as compared to EL34s (maybe that's what some would consider "aggressive"). The difference is slight. This is based on my A/Bing a ProMod (KT88) vs a QuickRod (EL34). I've also heard KT88s described as more "modern voicing", as well. If your guitars are bright by nature, then you may want to counter balance with EL34s and vice versa.
Can you swap KT88s for EL34s -- No. Not without some minor guts work on the amp and some re-biasing.

thanks ronmail, i guess i gotta keep looking for sound samples. i mainly use les paul type guitars so they are darker. maybe i will go with the 88's.

kt88 have a bigger and tighter lowend, plenty of mids but not as overpowering as the el34. i owned a quickrod and promod and i liked the kt88 amp the best, splawns have alot of upper mids and with the kt88 they seemed more balanced and slightly less in your face. everybody will hear something diffferent but thats just me.
