I bought a pair of Gold Lions KT88s last week and had a hell of time doing my mod Got it all straighten out and my amp has not sounded better . Then Wednesday I blew a freakin tube! Called tubedepot to order another pair to make a full quad and to send back the bad tube. Well everything was a go for Sat. delivery but got a message from the tube place that they could not match my 31 ma at this time it would be with their next tube shipment. Hope it will be this week Bummer cause I was lookin forward to jammin this weekend. Question ? Once I bias, when should I recheck for tube drift? Also, I thought most places burn in tubes for a short period? Not these, that I could tell.

Also, I thought most places burn in tubes for a short period? Not these, that I could tell. That sucks. I have not heard great things about Gold Lion reliability (especially in amps with high plate voltages FWIW like Splawn stuff). Even if they were burned in (which many dealers do not do) you still may have had that problem. I have not had any problems with JJ, Ruby or SED KT88's in my Nitro. I would still recheck your bias when you get new tubes.

When it rains....it pours Got off the phone with my tube provider today and he says the new shipment of tubes has not come in. I need something by this weekend . Bummer cause it will be weekend #2 that we can't jam So I ordered a pair of Black Sabel KT88s and yes they have been shipped but bad news is it will be Tuesday before I get them. My original order was overnight Saturday delivery ($29.95). Since They could not complete my order they offered free shipping to me just not overnight. I just spent $310 in the last 2 weeks in freakin tubes .And at this point still not playing. Oh well I think in the future I need another tube supplier

Just got off the phone with Josh from Splawn. He says not to bias over 50ma.

Yes,
I don't want to shake my finger or anything, but when it comes to power tubes I just pay the repairman to do the work and buy the tubes from him. As you can see, the few extra dollars are worth it! I know the feeling. I work on computers, and I used to really boost the DIY computer. Now, parts are so flaky, even from "reputable" brands, I just tell people to shop around and avoid one manufacturer...
Good luck!

Got my new KT88s( SEDs cryo treated) and installed them, bias at 50 ma. Sounded brittle and dull And the farts were back. Bias again at 52 ma and it sounds pretty good so far. Got the boys giving them a workout right now. So far I like the Gold Lions alot better. Will know more soon. They shipped me a new Gold Lion and it will be here friday. Just going to play the fook out of these and see. Should there be a big difference in sound at 50 ma -52 ma?

It's just a number right? I use my ear and it sounds 10 X better bias at 52ma. It really sounds good, but the bottom not as tight as the gold lions. Looser feeling. Hey,I have to learn to do this as I don't trust just anyone working on my amp . Unless it's something major I would take it to Scott. Retubing yourself is not rocket surgery .

Got my Gold Lion tube yesterday and installed it. I do prefer the GLs over the SEDS. With the SEDs the bottom is more pronounced but not as tight as the GLs. Overall the GL have a more balanced sound. Love to try one of the Gold Lion pre-amp tubes but they cost$ and tubedepot were all sold out.(could not give a date when they would have more . ) There has been a major run on those tubes, factory has been swamped and can't make enough of them.

hope your new tubes last longer than the others. Your running 4 GLs now right?

hope your new tubes last longer than the others. Your running 4 GLs now right? Me too Nope I have a pair of SEDs and a pair of Gold Lions. I use the GLs in 50 watt mode. Running all 4 KT88s is too much power for my jam room. I did try it since both pairs are rated at 31 ma.Sound was amazing but I decided 50 watts did the job pretty good.
