I had to text my drummer after I heard the news to make sure he was alright. He is the biggest Portnoy/DT fanboy. I had Awake once.....into garbage it went. My drummer tries so hard to make me like them but I just can't get into it. The drama-queen opera singer totally kills it for me.  |

I guess I'm one of the "HARDCORE" fans, they could put out a polka rap masterpiece and I would love every last minute of it. Seriously...I am a fan, but I agree about the singing style, that's always been my biggest complaint about DT. The songs he doesn't sing on are the best.

Love the band.....technically incredible. But yea, i think james should have been gone a while ago. Never could understand him....

The singing is so painful for me, lol. I just hate that operatic cheese style of singing though. Musically they are very impressive yet it bores me to tears. It sounds too polished or something. I do like Portnoy though. |

I do like Portnoy though. I'm with DD on this one. I had their first CD with "Pull me under" on it and I could never get into it at all. Great musicians and all it's just never been my cup of tea. Bummer that Portnoy left cause they have a huge following. |

for the record, James Lebrie stinks on ice...on average anyway.there's a few songs where I really dug him (and always have and will) but the bad started to outweigh the good..when he starts to really belt out the vocals you can't understand a single word he's saying..all the words run into each other...I also don't care when he goes into his 'sweet soothing james' persona...I dug him on the first few albums but then he just started to get on my nerves after that

LOL I kid, I kid..although I'm sure it wasn't just teh singing that you didn't like because apparently you don't predicate your musical fancies on the front man =D Amish steak!! LOLOLOL! Yeah I don't know, I like the Mastodon vocals. They are technically not very good but it works IMO. It fits the music and isn't a bad effort for dudes who never were singers to begin with. Musically, the DT singer is impressive but suuuuuper cheesy. It's my most hated vocal style and unfortunately it's common in my favorite genre (prog metal). I'd rather listen to a Bob Dylan & Les Claypool duet, lol! |

I love the "What did James say" video....side spliting funny
Speaking of Mastodon, I saw them live this year and they are amazing, they are one of those bands who sounds very close to their records. Dethklok was the headliner and were equally awesome.
And yes shreadheadhj, I'm with you, death metal growls are best! The ultimate DT lineup would include Mikael Akerfelt from Opeth doing vocals....makes me weak at the knees just thinking about it.

I sorta agree with Don, DT's vocals are pretty cheesy and definitely not why I listen to them. On the other hand, when that last Mastadon album dropped all my Metal friends said it was like the best record ever and I fell for it... I HATE it.. lol.
.. now the new Nevermore, Obsidian Conspiracy... now thats a great record. No cheesy vocals, angry, heavy and just tons of killer guitar.
