I have known about SL for some time but never checked him out for the most part.
Came across one of his REH videos and I am astounded. This man has got to be the most underrated guitar player ever. His technique, musicianship and ability to convey musical ideas was beyond brilliant. I am drinking the Koolaid.
I have Powers of Ten. What other recordings are out there ? I know he recorded with jonas helborg but I have never heard any of the material.
Now if I can just figure out how to play with my pick sideways like he did......

Big Shawn fan here, being from Memphis. One of the guys I'm playing with in one of my videos was his best friend (and also my dad's fraternity brother) and has a lot of his old gear, unheard demos, etc...he's always telling me really cool stories about Shawn. Of course, Shawn had to die a year before I picked up the guitar, so you can imagine how I feel... The HLS stuff is a lot more experimental, and much of it has a very Indian vibe going on. I like to listen to the bootlegs of his stuff he did with the Willies, a local cover band around here back in the late '80s. Phenomenal player with great phrasing and sense of melody. Really humble too (almost naively), and this allowed him to get abused by some of the slimier people in the industry. Got mixed up with the whole drug scene here (alot like Eric Gales). He died owing REH and WB hundreds of thousands of dollars. Sad story. This town was recently ranked the third most miserable in the US, and it's impact on local musicians like Shawn and Eric is certainly noticeable. Here's a real treat. My two favorite players, Shawn and Paul, tearing it up at one of our local music stores (more parts on YouTube):

Thanks for the great post Waylay. He seems like he was a very gentle soul from youtube footage and videos I have seen. I was surprised that he was a heavy smoker let alone into drugs. I am saddened by his story but man he left behind some great music.
His incorporation of legato and upstroke alternate picking is genius. It will take me years to incorporate it into my style but it's the freshest technique I have come across in years.

I knew Wade would be first to respond to a Shawn thread!
What's this about sideways pick use?

I knew Wade would be first to respond to a Shawn thread! What's this about sideways pick use? He did not always pick this way but for his blinding fast runs he held his pick basically straight up and down. Check out his " Power licks" video on youtube. The man had the cleanest technique I have ever seen or heard. He's blazing and since he groups his phrases in odd number sequences it gives his playing a violin like quality when in shred mode. He does not sound like a shredder yet he can play faster than anyone I know of. Very musical. I am enamored.

Many believe The Great Shawn Lane to be technically the best guitarist to have ever lived. Good luck on trying to emulate his catalog. He was also a virtuoso on piano. That being said, there's a big difference between theoretical knowledge/technical musicianship and actual songwriting... While he had a unique style, his songwriting skills definitely left something to be desired. Take Guthrie Govan for example: he was able to come up up with better songs in one album than Lane came up with in his whole career.
I still like Lane though, and am a huge fan of his. I just look at him for what he was. ProOOOOOOOOOOOObably my favorite work of his was "The Tri-Tone Fascination". His albums with Hellborg were all recorded live. While this sometimes made for marginally fun stuff, most of his Hellborg collaboration stuff is kinda forgettable IMHO. For an amazing album (that Lane didn't have too much input in) get MVP's "Centrifugal Funk". INSANE guitar playing all over that album. I think Brett Garsed really outshines Lane on that album, but it's a must have album... The album "Two Doors" with Michael Shrieve is really sick too!!! His harmony singing is just out of this world man...
In this order:
1) Centrifugal Funk [MVP] 2) Two Doors [Michael Shrieve] 3) The Tri-Tone Fascination 4) Abstract Logic [w/ Jonas Hellborg] 5) Time is the Enemy [w/ Jonas Hellborg] 6) Powers of Ten
The thread made me bust out some Two Doors MOFO~!~!~!

My two favorite players, Shawn and Paul That's kinda like an oxymoron. I dunno... What do I know. I guess I'm kind of a Gilbert hater.

IMO, Centrifugal Funk is too much of a shred wank-fest with muzak-ish covers of jazz and fusion classics. Cool to listen to for a little, though only if you're a guitar player.
The production on Powers of Ten is really weak too, but there's some good stuff on there. I just wish a full band were used to record it. PoT Live is better in this respect.
