Hey Guys,
I know there are few PWD fans on here so i wanted to give a review for you guys.
I actually had the cd for a few days now but kept tight lipped until the "official" release..today...here we go.
first off let me say i LOVE this disc more and more every time i hear it,this IS the cd of the year so far and with a bunch of cd's i was eagerly anticipating already out it has little or no competition from here on out. this was supposed to be a huge "gunfight at the ok corral" month and well it turned out to be one band brings a 30 megaton nuke and the rest bring bb guns!
the three other releases this month i was jonesing for were my children my bride,attack-attack and in fear and faith. my children my bride REALLY brought it with their newest release and is a solid second place, while in fear and faith (which two months ago i said would be fighting it out with parkway for time in my cd player) REALLY dropped the ball and put out a super disappointing disc,attack-attack was ok but not great..now on to the king!!
Parkway Drive has grown into my favorite band over the past two years and i said that if this new disc was as good as i hoped they would be #1 hands down..well it happened!
the disc starts off with a acoustic/clean intro that goes into a growl and big breakdown to get the onslaught started, from then on it is a ride of epic swells and lulls that sweep you away with every passing note.please be warned that this IS a little different than your "cookie cutter" metal core and typical parkway drive,it is WAY more melodic while maintaining that signature parkway sound and still being heavy..(and OH BOY IS IT HEAVY!!) just with a more almost "mature sound"to it.which brings me to ask how the h3ll can you have that much melody and be that brutal at the same time?? there is a lot going on in every song without ever being sloppy, jumbled or chaotic.and when i say "melodic" don't take that as there are ballads and singing choruses..because there isn't!!
the songs like unrest, hollow, set to destroy are all your normal parkway songs just kicked up a bit,the rest of the disc is a whole new parkway that i really dig a bunch, songs like alone, deadweight, home is for the heartless have much more melody and structure than they have done in the past.
the sound is HUGE,HUGE,HUGE!! every kickdrum slap is like a boot to the chest, you can hear every drum, cymbal, bass note and guitar note clear as day and nothing ever dominates the mix too much (the guy that produced this disc is joe barresi who produced queens of the stone age and tool) and he did a FANTASTIC job!! the guitar tone is monstrous again a ton of distortion,REALLY low tuning(a-a# for the most part and on 6 stringers). and yet it is crisp and clear and you hear every mind bending note, the guitar work really soars on this without being just mindless shredding. great riffs, great harmonies and world ending size breakdowns litter this disc from start to finish. besides the guitar work..since i dabble a bit,Winston's voice for me is the key to this being a step above, he has THE BEST screaming, growling vocals in the game (especially the growls..one listen to the "become my catalyst" growl in hollow and you will agree, plus the many more times he goes deep growl on this one) all the time being done that you can for the most part understand every word he says,it never is that barking dog napalm death vocals.
if you are a fan of heavy "metalcore" stuff and definately if you like parkway drive go buy this and support the band of the future. i am going to go out on a limb here and say they will be as big as some of the other bands in this genre very soon(if they are not already) and could be headining shows with bands that they opened for not that long ago..killswitch engage..i'm looking in your direction here..LOL!. i think they still have it streaming on their myspace page go and check it out.
rating 10/10
