I recently replaced my power tubes, in the process of experimentation noticed that different power tubes seemed to have a bigger effect on the overall voicing/tone of this amp than did preamp tube changes.
I've had many tube amps over the yrs and usually it was always the way around, weird.. Anybody else experience this ?

Yeah... I think it's partly because the Splawn amps have less preamp tube saturation. Changing pre's will give you a slightly different character (a bit more/less gain, darker/brighter), but changing PT's can make a big difference in the overall sound and feel (IMHO).

What brand did you swap from/to? What kind of changes did you hear and feel? I just got my Compy about a month ago, and I'd love to hear about other people's experience with tube swaps... Mine came with the Valley Arts EL-34B's, and I've been wondering how those compare with the Mullards and other tubes in this baby... One HELL of a transformer in this beast, it sounds better the more I crank it,and I drove my friend's 100 watt Marshall into the dirt this last weekend at a gig....Amazing amp.

I think the Valley Arts are the Sino tubes and that's what I recently (2-3 months ago) put in my QR. I replaced Tung Sol EL34B's. Prior to doing that I replaced the Tung Sol pre's with JJ's. I posted a detailed review in the QR forum, but to try and give you an idea, and keep it brief... I found a lot more life and character, more growl and grind in the Sino's than the Tung Sol's. I thought the Tung Sol's sounded darn good until I installed the Sino's. 1st Gear/OD2 became my favorite "home spot". Prior to the change 2nd Gear/OD1 occupied that location. I switch between the gears some, but really love 1st Gear/OD2 with the Sino's.

It really depends on how loud you play. If you play bedroom volumes, the power tubes are not going to affect the tone as much as if you play cranked because they never get driven into saturation. The preamp tubes affect the tone quite a bit because the character of the tube will be more pronounced the more you turn up the gain on your amp. If you play with low gain and high volume, the power tubes probably matter most. If you play high gain at low volume, then the preamp tubes probably matter most. They both affect the overall tone for sure.
