Hey!
OK, so I have a bunch of guitars, but my main practice guitar is a cheap guitar with a EVH Duncan (see my picture). The other guitar that I use regularly is an EVH Wolfgang that I have also placed an EVH Duncan into. The amp I play at PRACTICE is a Peavey XXX...which I like very much. The XXX combined with the cheap black and white guitar and Duncan EVH sounds great. The Wolfgang with the XXX is great. However, the black and white guitar with the Quickrod just doesn't have the gain that I want.
Now remember, the only difference is the actual guitar wood. Basswood in the Wolfgang versus God knows what in the Cheapy. The pickups are the same.
Anyone have any ideas why the Wolfgang sounds WAY better into the QR than the cheapy guitar...both with the same pickups??
Could the wood make that much of a difference? The only other thing I can think of is that the pickup in the cheapy is set lower than the Wolfgang physically, so since it is farther from the strings I know that can alter the gain.....
Thanks!

The wood will alter the tone but shouldn't alter the amount of gain unless maybe its made from plywood . Then I think the lack of mass may alter the gain .

Strange... I have no idea what might be going on there. If nothing else, maybe add a clean boost (if you don't already use one) to your pedal board and kick it in for a little more "umph" when using the cheapy guitar. If you do figure this out, please let us know. Sounds like a case for Sherlock Holmes!

My guess is that IT IS the basswood bodied wolfgang.Alot of people dont care for basswood because of its ultra light weight and softness, but for guys like EVH,Petrucci,Vai,Satriani,etc...they swear buy it.My HP special sounds absolutely huge through my nitro.I dont have a quickrod,so this is just my guess.I would not think that it would matter between the two.Acoustically,my basswood bodied HP sounds empty, but plug it in and BAM!!! My LP Standard sounded completely weak compared to it.My other guitars are mahogany and I have either modded the pots, lowered pickups, treble bleed,etc...to get them as close to the HP as possible.Anyway, just my two cents.

I have the same issue...kind of. My main guitar is an EBMM Axis (basswood) and I love the tone I get with that guitar and my QR. My other guitar is an EBMM Silhouette (ash) and I've tried a couple different pups and I cant seem to get it to jive with my QR. Gain is not the problem but rather the sustain of chords or notes ...just seems to choke off too quickly. It's hard to explain..

Maybe your other axe is ash and ash just sucks?? ;D Who knows? I'm just gonna keep on searching for answers. My next step was buying a bigger brass or titanium block. let me know if you find anything else out, cool?

What is the bridge of each guitar? Both my guitars have original MusicMan Floyds. The Axis is dive only and the Silo floats...although I did block it for a while but it didnt make a difference

I thought vai's signature white guitar is alder?
anywho, could be a bad piece of wood.....I had an EBMM JP6 that was basswood and no matter what pickups I had it in it always sounded like twangy ass through my QR..
and remember, the QR is less saturated than something like the XXX..with all that saturation on tap in the XXX you can mask the nature of a particular guitar...

I know alotta people dig them...and their fit and finish is top notch....but I don't like the fact that they're direct mounted pickups..puttin gin something deeper like a duncan involved routing out the fookin' pickup cavity....

The Axis is dive only and the Silo floats...although I did block it for a while but it didnt make a difference Oops, that was to Kev! Say if one was fixed bridge and one was a trem, or both were trems but one had a fatass brass block. I think Shred has the right idea, amp wise. With all the XXX's saturation, I bet you could string up a garden spade and it would sound the same. The Splawn has always been very revealing about everything you feed it, and I think in this case it's letting you hear why one is a generic mystery wood budgetcaster and one is a nice Californian instrument. Comparing pickup heights and adjusting as necessary might help, though. Been thinking about getting one of these 78 Duncans lately.
