Okay, voice your opinion...
Aside from the obvious "Big 3" (Los Angeles, New York City and Nashville), where are there great local music scenes with good venues, supportive fans and just an overall strong, healthy music scene?

I do hear a lot about Austin. The South By Southwest festival, for example. I mostly heard oddball indie coming from there, though — not sure how metal friendly an area it is.

I have to disagree about NYC being a good scene for music. There is just too much going on and there are so many bands the market is over-saturated. For larger style acts it is fine but for a local music scene and potential to get connected I don't think it's that great. NJ has a better local scene and even that is pathetic. A lot of the real good original bars are closing or changing into dance/cover band clubs. There aren't many good places left to play.

Austin has alot of different music and metal has a presence, but not like its neighbor San Antonio, or Houston for that matter.Austin is more diverse, but obviously they have had its fair share of great blues/rock players as well...(SRV,Eric Johnson,Chris Duarte,etc..).I would say if your into music as a whole..austin would be tops on my list for overall music scene.Like it was said above..South by Southwest is now the single biggest music event in the world.

Branson Missouri, big on country music EEEEEKKKKK! Horrible pay for a lot of work with burned out folks. Though, they are working to legalize gambling and bring in Casinos which could up the scene a bit. That's a dying town - lots of the "theaters" are going to canned music, can't afford to pay real musicians.

Texas in general is rippin. College Station, New Branufels (sp), Austin...even up around Lubbock. You can play all over that region as a musician and make a decent living.
Atlanta is another solid music town - the region around it has always been happening. Lotta folks from Nashville drive to Atlanta (GA in general) to play. Not just country...tons of varied styles.

San Francisco/ Bay area is pretty awesome. There are some great places to see shows in the city and a lot of local bands that have made it pretty big. There's something about seeing a band you love playing in their hometown that is really cool.

Was going strong when the "Boom" about it was happening. Just didn't sustain. Way too many theatres. Far too few clubs. Acts playing there that no one really cares about except the blue hairs.

With everything going online, etc...I think the day of the "scene" is diminishing. I know plenty of guys who prefer to just sit at home and make music to distribute online.
Memphis for sure has a dead scene. So for anyone who thinks they have it bad (especially NYC), come down here to see what bad is. It's really bad. Really, it's that bad.
