I have a potential opportunity to take a good paying job in Texas and would be relocating if all goes well with the process. The primary areas of business would be Dallas and Houston. I'd most likely be able to live anywhere in the surrounding areas as I would be driving to various locations. I'd love to get some input from fellow Splawners who either currently live in Texas, or have lived there. I've lived in California all my life and only driven through Northern Texas (Amarillo) a couple times, so I don't know much about the area. Kinda looking at Round Rock / Austin area, but that might be pushing the limits in terms of distance from Dallas / Houston. Just kinda looking for some ideas as to which towns / areas might be nice places to live.

Great diverse music scene there.

Where is SBK? That boy loves him some Texas. Haha Ayton, thats right..so much I have not had much time to spend online like I used to.Anyway,as far as giving you some info on where to live, thats a tough one. Both Dallas and Houston are exciting places to be,but they are quite a ways apart from each other. Not sure of the exact distance, but somewhere in the neighborhood of 4-5 hours. The thing with Houston is that you are not far from the water and roughly 2+ hours from Austin and San Antonio and about 3 hours from Corpus Christi. The suburbs of Houston are exploding right now and the pay rate as opposed to the cost of living is pretty balanced unlike the Austin and Dallas area.If you are looking at the Austin area, the music scene there is like no other. Its a LIVE music town....Obviously Austin is a college type of town and the nightlife scene is always happening 24/7.The 3 areas you mentioned are all great places and one would have to sit down and ask himself what exactly are you looking for in a place to live and then narrow it down.I could help even more on some of the specifics, but I am not quite sure what type of area you want to live in.

SBK (and others)...
Thanks for the info. I'll be responsible for the S.W. region (TX, NM, AZ, CA, etc.) but a lot of their existing business is in the Dallas / Houston areas. Having lived in the Los Angeles area for the last thirty years I'm used to a decent music scene and lots of options as far as recreation and entertainment. I've heard some areas of Texas shut down kinda early and some are flat out sleepy lil' towns. As long as I'm near a good sized airport and within a 2-3 hours of Dallas and Houston by car, I think I'd be OK. Lastly, I'd like to be in an area where the winters are a little more moderate. Not a cold weather guy. That's kinda why I'm liking Austin and Round Rock. The latter would put me a little closer to Dallas. My son is off to college and my daughter is graduating H.S. this year, so schools aren't really a concern. Just like to live in a nice area of a nice town where I wouldn't have much trouble finding things to do. I likes me some live music and I likes me some night life along with some fishin' and what not.

I dont think you need to worry about any area of Texas having a heavy winter.Sure it snows in the north part of Texas from time to time and sometimes even in the south, but for the most part all areas of Texas are pretty moderate.Sounds like either Austin or Houston would be good for you.Austin never sleeps and Houston is not far behindthem. If you like to fish, forget Dallas unless you plan on flying southeast everytime you want to go salt water fishing.Other than that,Dallas is pretty happening.

BTW,you didnt mention it,but North San Antonio is where its at for me.. Right on! North San Antonio can't be too far from Round Rock. I think Round Rock is about 20 minutes North of Austin??? Would the airport in San Antonio be considered a major airport? I suppose if I wind up in the Austin area that would be the airport I would use most. It doesn't have to be LAX major, just big enough to handle business flights mostly in the South West. I may have to fly to Illinois once or twice a year and maybe to Alabama / Florida Pan Handle area once a year, but I could drive up to DFW airport for that if necessary. BTW... if this happens I definitely plan to visit the Alamo among other noteworthy destinations in the area. Thanks for your help!

All places mentioned have airports that will take you wherever you want to go.There are two airports in Houston that are usually cheaper than the other cities mentioned because of the volume.

I googled the San Antonio airport after my last post and it came up as San Antonio Int'l Airport, so I'm sure it'll do just fine. 90% of my travel would be business and covered by the company so if it's a little more expensive it's not a big deal. I've found that most the time you spend more time and money driving to the larger airports and paying more for parking than you save on the ticket. Also, there's the benefit of getting through the airport much faster with most the mid-sized airports. I fly in and out of Bob Hope (Burbank, CA) a lot and it's waaaay faster than LAX.

Welcome to TEXAS! Houston is about 3 hours from Dallas. The weather won't be an issue but it may be slightly warmer in Houston than Dallas. I live east of Houston in Beaumont but I lived in Waco for a couple of years in the late 80's. The cost of living is very reasonable compared to other parts of the country. There are some really nice cities surrounding Houston and Dallas that would be great to live in. Let me know if I can help since it looks like I may be one of the closest to your final destination. I know that there are some guys on this forum from Houston though.

Thanks for all the replies!!! I spoke with the recruiter yesterday and it looks pretty good. I'd say it's about a 70% chance and it should happen in the next 4-6 weeks. I've kinda set my sights on the Austin - San Marcos - Round Rock areas, but nothing is absolute at this point. Thanks again to all!
