Anybody see How It's Made tonight? Science Channel. I watch it a lot. Perfect non-taxing night time viewing. Often they do simple things like how a pencil or a basketball is made, but tonight it was guitar amps!
This is assembly line production of course, not boutique, but at least they didn't go with a modeler. They followed a Traynor tube combo from start to finish. Got to see the wave soldering system, I think like the kind that caused a little uproar when Splawn started using them this year instead of soldering by hand. It was like a rolling 18-inch wave of hot solder in a little vat, and the whole amp circuit board with all the resistors etc slotted in place was just rolled over the top of it in about two seconds, making hundreds of little perfect solders. Mrs Ayton just looked over at me at this point, because she knows how I spend all day wiring a guitar, making sure I get those healthy shiny solders. That's about what, 12 connections? 15? Here were hundreds in seconds.
Interesting viewing. They got quite a lot in for a short segment.

YouTube provides! A bit blurry to see the finer points of the circuit board, but you get the gist.
