I understand that the QR and PS are supposed to have the same preamp section and that they are the same with the exception of the clean channel. I owned an 06 QR with the JJ preamp tubes and the Mullard EL34 power section. I just got an 09' PS that is set up with ALL Tungsols. I guess my question is, would this different tube array make this amp sound completely different than my QR given they both have the same preamp? My old QR has MUCH more BITE and aggressiveness. My brand new PS sounds flat and flubby in comparison? ?

You might hear a big difference right there. A lot of guys don't really care for the Tung Sol 12 AX7's in their QR's. The new Splawns have Heybor transformers which I hear have a smoother "less aggressive" sound than the old Mercury Magnet transformers that use to come stock in Splawns. Some guys prefer the Heybors. I guess it is all about personal preference.

A touch more gain and a little more attitude IMO. Lots of guys swear by the Mullard power tubes, but I haven't tried a set in my amp yet. I'm OK for now with the Tung Sols. I would say try the JJ preamp tubes first. If it sounds like it's still missing something, then try a set of Mullards in the power section.

Yeah. Got all new tubes on order. JJ pre's and Mullard power. We'll see if it gets me closer to the tone of my 06'

VERDICT;
I got the tubes and biased them in around 32ma. Replaced the preamp with JJ's, and all is good..... They did make a dramatic difference in the feel and tone. All those "glassy" tones are back! And the mid-slice is just cutting.... The TUNG-SOLS just didnt do it for me. Live n learn..........

I tried the Tungsols too. I didn't like them at all. They made my ProStock sound lethargic. I replaced them with JJ's and it was breathing fire. Go figure...
