JD, yes it was running full power through a 4x12. What you said above could explain the similarity you're hearing.

I am going to give the SED Winged C EL34's a try. I will let you know what I think of them once I play them for a bit.

Always wanted to know how those would sound. Heard conflicting things. Scott told me he thought the Tung Sols were similar.

I have read that the Tung Sol EL34B's and the SED Winged C's do sound pretty close. The reviewer said that Tung Sol's would do what the SED's would for $20.00 less a quad. I Plan to do some playing this weekend, or sooner if possible, and give the SED's a try. I have never tried a tube in a Splawn amp that I did not like. They have all sounded real good, but different. I spoke to someone recently who told me that setting the bias lower will decrease the midrange. I have never felt the need to lessen the midrange, but I know that some people have. A Splawn cuts through the mix like nothing I have ever heard before.

SED Winged C's ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are the best tubes I have tried so far. I have not tried the Sinos yet, but I will take the SED's over the JJ's, the Tung Sols and the Mullards. These suckers are bad to the bone. My tubes are REAL closely matched and I have almost no high gain amp hiss even in 3rd gear/OD2. The tone is incredible. I have a JJ 12AX7 in V1 (the first gain stage) and Tung Sol 12 AX7's in V2 and V3.

JD:
Do you find the Competition to be noticeably quieter than your QR -- even in the triode setting?
I have a PM (120W) and then got a Competition (50W) for better volume management. Both amps sound virtually identical, and up to 10 or 11 o'clock on the volume knob I find that they generate pretty much the same level of volume. Even in Triode, the Comp is barely quieter than the PM. What's your experience?

I do notice a pretty big difference between Triode and full power, but part of that is due to the difference in how the amp feels and sounds when in Triode mode. Triode mode works well for me for late night playing, but I still have the loop master set at the 10:00 (clock face) position. I do hear a difference in volume when I switch to full power. The difference between 50 watts and 100 watts is only like 3db in the first place. A 50 watt tube amp is going to be LOUD without some form of volume attenuation.

I'm sure the loop master does wonders to keep the volume manageable.
