Does anybody have experience with KT88's @ half power? Or a 50w KT88? I switched to half power last night and MY GOODNESS! Me likey!! I've heard that el34's on half power can be "browner, saggier and/or pissier." I didn't notice much of that with the KT88's at all. Was still just as tight with more compression and only the SLIGHTEST drop in vol. I'm going to give it a couple of days of testing but I might just pull the outer tubes, re-bias for 50w and go 1/2 price on power tubes ;D Anybody else with KT88's maybe give it a try and see if they react to 1/2 power like EL34's.

I ran my Pro-Mod with the two outer kt88's pulled for a long time. At the time, it was just too much volume to tame and pulling the tubes did the trick. It sounded awesome and aggressive but still kept all the boom. After a while, I started feeling like a pu**y and popped the other tubes back in....

I have a ProStock w/ JJ KT-88's. I tried the half power thing and to me it didn't really matter that much. I've heard it said that the spl between full and half is roughly 3db. I don't know if that's true or not, but like I said, I could hardly tell the difference... I also have a post driver mast vol added so that might have something to do with it. Do you have Sino pre's and pt's? Maybe that has something to do with the difference you're hearing........

I've been switching back and forth a lot today and I think what's happening is I'm getting the tone I would have at a louder vol only @ about 3-5db less. Not really any change in tone except a bit more comp. At least for me it means 1/2 price on power tubes with NO loss of the tone I like. BTW.... It came with the sino pres and sovtek powers. When it's time I think I'll try some Genelex Gold Lions(came stock in marshal majors I've heard, pair $100 reissue) or Ruby KT88STR's. I've had the loop vol off for checking half power/ full power tone change.

I have a PM w/ KT88s (120 Watts) and a Competition w/ KT77s (50 Watts). Below 10 or 11 o'clock on the volume knob, there's hardly a difference between the 2 amps -- in terms of tone and volume. When using and comparing the amps switched to half power (or pentode / triode on the Comp), again there's hardly a discernible difference in volume or tone -- that's comparing them amps to each other and comparing them between full and half power settings. If you get into very high volume territory (which has never been necessary for me), I would expect the differences to be more noticeable.
I've been thinking of switching to 6550B tubes. I understand these tubes are a little smoother than the KTs and might be a little quieter. Do you guys have any experience with these tubes in these amps?

He just put up a BADA$$ clip yesterday. Shoot him a PM
