I am getting the quickrod head today(looks out the window for Fedex truck) and was wondering if I should get a splawn or avatar cab to go with it. The splawn cab is considerately more expensive which leaves me to believe it is more well constructed though I believe they are both made of birch. If I go with splawn cab I will probably get the SB 25's if the avatar probably the Hellatone slightly aged celestion Gh1230's. I was wondering if ya'll could give some advice or pros/cons about the cabs you use or about the the ones I'm thinking about getting. Thanks!

I had an avatar 2x12 with Vintage 30's and my Splawn 2x12 with small blocks sounds a lot better, I don't know how much of the tone difference between them is in the speakers and how much is in the construction but the splawn sounds a lot bigger, thicker and punchier. I think the construction definetly has to do with it, though before buying my Splawn I asked the same question as you- if they are both made of birch what would make one better than the other? I didn't really get an answer so I can't help you with that. You might wanna try asking Scott this question.

BTW I had the Avatar standard 2x12, i've read the oversized 2x12 sounds better and I remember a thread on harmony central I think with pics of the insides comparing the construction to a Bogner 2x12.

I definitely like the look of the splawn cabs better but there is a big difference (for me anyway) between $500 and $850 bucks. If the splawn cabs are really that much better I will probably just wait until I save up the money and get the splawn. It's not like I'm suffering I have a 6 mth old 4x12 with V30's in it to get me through until then. Is anyone running a full stack with quickrod? Maybe I could run one cab with the V30's and another with the SB 25's, I don't know how differently those speakers break up, but I'm sure they are pretty close.

The Avatar cabs are nice (have several in various configs). Great (i.e. HUGE) bang for the buck. Another source, look into the LOPO Signature series 212 ( www.lopoline.com/catalog/item/4313157/4429251.htm ). Come unloaded and you can slap in some SB25's from Scott. That's the route I went for my 212 and it's killer - great cab!! Deep, nicely made, came with casters. Stompin' tones! Only complaint for the product, the tolex is a bit thin...or not as heavily glued to the wood as others - tears/dings easier.

If you decide on Avatar go with the vintage series as they seem to be constructed better.
BTW I just noticed something strange- the splawn standard 2x12 is $500, the oversized is $600, the standard unloaded is $350, the oversized unloaded is $375. I think the oversized comes standard with casters as well, which are $25 extra on the standard, so essentially they both cost the same unloaded.

Wow, I was thinking about those Avatar cabs myself this week, and here is a thread!
Those 2x12 slant cabs from lopoline look SHWEET also! Wish they had a kit for that one!

On closer inspection of the lopoline site, I see that **some** of their 2x12 cabs are only 27" wide, and Splawn heads I believe are 29" wide (correct me if I am wrong, I'm not a Splawn owner yet)
Methinks it would look a little hokey to have the head wider than the cab...but thats just me.

I have the vintage style Avatar 2 x 12 and it is wider and deeper than my Splawn Plexi style head box. The dimensions are 30"W x 24.5"H x 12"D. I bought some casters from Splawn and put them on the cabinet. I had a Celestion V30 and Celestion G12H Heritage installed. The cabinet was a little under $500.00 total including shipping. I would love to have a Splawn 2 x 12 and 4 x 12 someday, but my Avatar cabinet is a great cabinet; especially considering the price. It matches my Plexi head box pretty well.

I can vouch for the quality of both. I use one of the avatar vintage oversized 1X12 cabs that I've actually beefed up with the steel bracing that the mills acoustic cabs have (made quite a difference and was dirt cheap). I use an earcandy sugarcone speaker in it and it can handle everything my nitro throws at it and sounds SUPERB for a 1X12 no matter what logo is on it.
My main gigging cab though is the 4x12 and there's obviously no comparison between the two but I will say that the avatar 1X12 sounds MUCH better than my avatar standard 2X12.
I'll also say that the internal construction of the splawn is lightyears better than the avatar.
If price is a big deal, get the avatar but get better speakers than the V30s'. Get a pair of the G12K100's with the lead80's and you'll be set!
